Monrovia is the capital of Liberia, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, and its history makes it unique: it was founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society as a settlement for freed African-American slaves, and it's named after US President James Monroe. That's why English is the official language and the city has cultural roots tied to the United States. It's a hot, very humid coastal city, with one of the most intense rainy seasons on the planet. Shaped by past civil wars and the Ebola epidemic, today it's a capital under reconstruction, with an African-Caribbean feel facing the ocean.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Monrovia? How much do you need per month in Monrovia?
Monrovia is not a nomad base, and it's fairer to say so straight: there's no remote-work scene, power means your own generator, malaria is a year-round high risk, and anything medically serious ends in a medevac to Accra or Europe. The people living here arrive with a contract — UN and NGOs, embassies, mining and rubber (Firestone, ArcelorMittal, gold in the interior), multi-generation Lebanese trading families, and returning Liberian diaspora. It works if you have a concrete reason and someone covering your logistics; if you just want a cheap place to open a laptop, the real cost and the daily grind don't add up. And don't read the monthly figure alone: the barrier here isn't the month, it's the cash rent advance they want before handing over the keys.

Liberia is on the ACE submarine cable (it landed in Monrovia around 2011 and went commercial shortly after), so bandwidth exists, but good fibre stops at a handful of streets in Sinkor and Mamba Point plus some hotels and offices: a decent business line runs roughly ≈US$100-300/month depending on provider and capacity. Most people live on 4G mobile data from Orange or Lonestar Cell MTN, typically ≈5-20 Mbps, dropping to nothing in heavy rain or at peak hours. The real problem isn't bandwidth, it's electricity: with no stable grid, your router dies when the generator does, and much of the city's tower network runs on the same logic. Starlink is the obvious fix on paper, but before you buy the kit, verify it's actually enabled and operating in Liberia on your travel dates — availability and regulatory clearance across the region have shifted fast and this isn't something to assume. There's no systematic internet censorship, though social media was restricted during the June 2019 protests, so the precedent is there. Realistic setup: two SIMs from different carriers, a battery or UPS for the router, and never promise a critical video call without a backup.
CoworkingCoworking
There's no coworking market in the sense you know from Medellín or Bangkok: no chains, no day passes across town, no cafés full of laptops. What does exist is iCampus Liberia, an innovation hub in Monrovia that works as shared space for startups, NGOs and local freelancers, with desks and meeting rooms. I'm not giving you a price, because I can't confirm they publish one and quoting a number would just fake your budget: email them before you arrive and let them confirm it. Beyond that, people work from their organisation's office, from home on a generator, or from hotel lobbies and wifi restaurants along Tubman Boulevard, where you buy something and stay. If your job depends on professional space with guaranteed power and connectivity, the honest answer is that here you build it yourself.
Sinkor is the corridor where nearly every foreigner lives: laid out along numbered streets off Tubman Boulevard, it holds the restaurants, the import supermarkets, and most of the houses that come with a generator and water tank. Mamba Point is the embassy headland — including the US embassy — with hotels and the priciest, best-guarded houses in the city. Congo Town sits near the ministerial complex on the same boulevard and holds mid-range housing, much of it filled by agency and NGO staff. If you want beach and quiet there are two separate ways out, and they aren't the same place: southeast along the Roberts airport highway you get Thinker's Village and Kendeja; northwest, across the Saint Paul River toward Brewerville, you get the Virginia area. Both charge the same toll — daily traffic to get into town. Bushrod Island is port and industry, and West Point is a dense, precarious neighbourhood: neither is where you'd settle in.
ComunidadCommunity
The foreign community is small, closed and contract-based: within two weeks you know half of it, because everyone crosses paths in the same offices, the same four bars, and the same beach on Sunday. Social life revolves around embassy events, Friday nights at a handful of spots in Sinkor and Mamba Point, and weekends out at Kendeja, Libassa or Robertsport to surf. There's no nomad community, no remote-work meetups, no group of newly arrived laptop people; if that's what you're after, it isn't here. What is real is that Liberia is English-speaking and Liberians have a well-earned reputation for being sociable and direct, so making local friends is far easier than in much of the region — as long as you step out of the expat bubble, which is comfortable and swallows people fast.
Three things break budgets here. First: landlords want rent up front, and not one month — six months to two full years is normal practice, so you need thousands of dollars in cash before your first night's sleep, and that money is gone if the place turns out bad. Second: it's a cash, dual-currency economy; Liberian dollars for small stuff, USD for rent and anything big, ATMs fail or run dry, cards are barely accepted outside hotels, and worn or torn USD notes get refused — bring clean cash and use Orange Money or MTN MoMo, which genuinely work day to day. Third: health. Malaria is a year-round high risk, Monrovia is one of the rainiest capitals on earth (May to October is a genuine deluge), and serious medical care means evacuation; without medevac insurance you shouldn't even board the plane. Add that Roberts airport sits ≈1.5 hours from the city, that you don't walk at night — armed robbery, and unlit streets because there's no grid — and that visas are arranged before you travel: check with the consulate or the official portal whether yours is a consular visa or an e-visa, because Liberia has been shifting that process, and budget for a mandatory yellow fever certificate and registration at Immigration for long stays. None of this is apocalyptic: it's the real checklist you have to solve before deciding whether it's worth it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
