Maputo is the capital of Mozambique, spread along a great Indian Ocean bay at the southern tip of the country. It was Lourenço Marques in the Portuguese colonial era and it still shows: wide tree-lined avenues named after revolutionary leaders, faded art deco buildings and a street life that's Lusophone and African at once. Portuguese is spoken, the seafood is extremely fresh, and the pace is warm and unhurried. It's not a city of grand monuments but of the bay, markets, terraces and that cultural crossroads between Portugal, India and southern Africa.
Mejor épocaBest time
The dry season (May-October) is best: warm and free of the southern-summer rains. January-March is humid, hot and carries cyclone risk on the coast.

The center (the Baixa) is walkable, but distances are long and the heat is real. Locals use chapas (minibuses); taxis are easier for travelers.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Maputo? How much do you need per month in Maputo?
Maputo works if your job can survive so-so internet and what you want is the ocean, seafood, Portuguese, and a laid-back African capital with almost no backpackers and no "nomad scene". It doesn't work if you need 24/7 coworking, cheap fast fiber, or tech meetups to meet people: the foreign crowd here is NGOs, aid work, embassies and the energy sector, not laptops. And it's not as cheap as it sounds — living in the good part of town costs like an expensive Latin American capital, because nearly everything is imported from South Africa.

Gigabit barato aquí no existe.Fiber exists in Polana, Sommerschield and Baixa, but it's expensive for what you get: typical 10–50 Mbps plans at ≈US$45–90 a month, with weak upload and high latency to Europe and the Americas, since traffic leaves via submarine cable through South Africa. Fine for email, Slack and normal video calls; don't count on uploading heavy video every day. Vodacom's 4G covers the city well and is your best backup — always keep credit loaded so you can tether (SIMs are registered with your passport). Power cuts happen: EDM outages, plus blackouts after big storms. If you'll work from home, rent in a building with a generator, or at least sort out a UPS for the router. Cheap gigabit isn't a thing here.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is small and not built for passing nomads: mostly incubator spaces and business centers tied to banks, NGOs and entrepreneurship programs, clustered between Baixa and Polana. I won't name places because they open and close often — ask in the foreigners' groups when you land, that's the only up-to-date list there is. A monthly pass runs ≈US$100–200 and usually includes a desk, internet and a meeting room, but few open at night or on weekends. In practice most people work from home and use Polana's cafés and hotel lobbies as an afternoon office: decent wifi, good coffee, not many outlets. Before paying for a full month, spend a day there and test the upload on a real video call.
Polana Cimento (A and B) is the default foreigner zone: embassies, cafés, supermarkets, leafy streets you can walk by day, and most of the furnished-apartment stock. Sommerschield I and II is the same but more residential, quieter and pricier — houses and newer buildings, little within walking distance, so you'll rely on a car or a txopela. Baixa is the historic business downtown: charming old buildings, noticeably cheaper, much noisier, and empty at night; good if you want the real city and don't mind an early evening. Costa do Sol, along the coastal road north, is the beach option: seafood restaurants, sea breeze, permanent-Sunday mood — but far from the center and car-dependent. To stretch the budget, Malhangalene and Alto Maé are clearly cheaper and more local, and that's where Portuguese stops being optional.
ComunidadCommunity
You won't find a nomad community — you'll find an expat community, which is a different thing. It's NGO and aid workers, embassy staff and energy-sector people, plus South Africans, Portuguese and Brazilians, most of whom arrived on a two-year contract, not with a laptop. You meet people in Polana's bars and cafés, at the seafront restaurants on Sundays, running or at the sports clubs along the water, and above all in the foreigners-in-Maputo WhatsApp and Facebook groups — not at tech meetups, because there basically aren't any. Daily life runs in Portuguese (with Ronga or Changana on the street); if you speak Spanish you'll follow it fast and get by within a couple of months, but without Portuguese your world shrinks to the small English-speaking circle. The upside of a small crowd: people open up fast and within three weeks you'll know half of it.
Three things, in order. Safety: street phone-snatching is common — don't walk at night, don't pull your phone out on the sidewalk, be careful in Baixa after dark and on empty stretches of the coastal road. Foreigners are legally required to carry ID and police do check; the usual move is to carry a passport copy and leave the original at home, though some officers will insist on the original. (The Cabo Delgado insurgency is over 1,500 km north and doesn't touch Maputo; politics does: after the October 2024 elections there were months of protests, roadblocks and days when the city simply stopped. It can repeat around election cycles.) Money: nearly everything is cash or mobile wallet (M-Pesa, e-Mola); ATMs have low per-withdrawal limits and charge fees, and your foreign card won't always work outside hotels and good restaurants. Add that rentals in the good areas are quoted in dollars or rand and usually want several months up front — negotiate, and never pay for a place you haven't seen. And the legal side: there is no digital nomad visa; several nationalities enter visa-free or with a visa on arrival (typically 30 days) and an eVisa exists, but rules change often and many Latin American passports do need paperwork in advance — confirm YOUR case with the consulate before booking. Staying for months means applying for the DIRE, the foreign resident card. Weather: December to March is hot, humid and rainy (cyclones hit central Mozambique harder, but southern storms still flood streets and knock out power); the dry winter from June to August is the best window to try the city out.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
