Macapá is the capital of Amapá, a remote state in Brazil's far north, and it has a geographic quirk almost no other capital shares: the Equator runs right through it. It sits on the northern arm of the Amazon delta, where the river grows so wide it looks like the sea. The heat is equatorial, steady and humid all year. It's a slow-paced Amazonian city, more functional than touristy, defined by the river and by its spot on the middle of the planet.
Mejor épocaBest time
The less rainy season (June to November) is most comfortable. The wet season (January to May) brings intense Amazonian downpours. It's hot and humid all year.
PresupuestoBudget
Brazilian price levels, though the remoteness makes some imported goods pricier. Eating local (river fish, real açaí) is cheap.
You mostly arrive by plane; by road it's isolated from the rest of Brazil. In town there are buses and taxis; the riverfront is walkable.
