Luxembourg City unfolds across plateaus and ravines above the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers; that topography defines the visit more than its size. For a first reading, connect Grund, Kirchberg, Casamatas del Bock, Chemin de la Corniche: UNESCO fortifications, lower-town quarters and European institutions coexist at short distances. It is compact, multilingual and expensive, but free public transport makes exploring without a car easy.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Luxemburgo? How much do you need per month in Luxemburgo?
Luxembourg works as a base if your income is high and denominated in euros, or if you're coming for a job in finance, corporate tech or the EU institutions. For the average nomad it's simply expensive: rent eats the budget, and the rental market asks for payslips and an employment contract that a freelancer rarely has. In exchange you get excellent fibre, free public transport nationwide, and France, Belgium and Germany less than an hour away by train.

Internet y señalInternet & signal
Aquí no vas a sufrir. You won't suffer here. Luxembourg has one of the highest fibre-to-the-home coverage rates in Europe, and gigabit plans are standard rather than premium; home internet runs ≈US$50-75/month depending on speed and whether you bundle TV. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is solid across practically the whole country (it's tiny and heavily built out), including on the train to Belgium or Germany. No blackouts, no censorship, no VPN games. The one real catch: if you rent furnished short-term, confirm the internet is already installed and in the landlord's name, because activating a new line can take weeks.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene exists but it's corporate, not laptop-and-smoothie: it's built for fintech startups, consultants and small teams, not for nomads passing through. Expect clean, quiet, expensive spaces — roughly ≈US$200-250 for a flexible hot desk and ≈US$300-450 for a dedicated desk, usually on a monthly contract rather than day passes. Names you'll come across include Technoport (the public incubator, mainly at Esch-Belval and Foetz) and The Office, which runs several locations in the city; there are also more creative spaces such as Bamhaus over in Dommeldange. Operators and prices change often, so check the space is still open and ask for a day trial before you sign anything. If the budget doesn't stretch, plenty of people work from cafés and public libraries — though downtown cafés are small and don't love you camping at a table for four hours.
Bonnevoie is the most sensible bet: residential, mixed, walkable to the station, and about as close to "normal" rent as the city gets. Quartier Gare (around the central station) is the cheapest and most international, with the best train and bus links — but also the roughest streets after dark. Limpertsberg is quiet, leafy and home to one of the university's campuses, a good middle ground if you want calm without going far. Belair and Merl are the well-paid expat family neighbourhoods: pretty, safe, pricey. Kirchberg is where the banks and EU institutions sit — modern and practical but very much an office district, dead at night. And if your wallet matters more than the postcode, plenty of people live in Esch-sur-Alzette / Belval, or straight across the border in Arlon (Belgium), Thionville (France) or Trier (Germany), and commute in by train — those border towns are 20 to 50 minutes out.
ComunidadCommunity
Nearly half the country's residents are foreign nationals, so nobody will treat you as an oddity — being new is the norm here. French is the everyday language in shops, restaurants and admin; Luxembourgish is the national language, German is widely used in press and schooling, and English works fine in finance, tech and the EU-institution crowd. The largest foreign community by far is Portuguese, and Spanish speakers get by surprisingly well with them; there is a Spanish-speaking community, but it's small compared to Madrid, Lisbon or Mexico City. Meeting people is easy on the professional side (fintech and startup meetups, InterNations, expat groups, sports leagues) and slower on the personal side: many people are here for work, head home across the border at weekends, and aren't building a local social life.
First: there is no digital nomad visa. If you're not an EU national you enter on the Schengen 90 days in any 180 — and those 90 days include time spent in Spain, France or Germany too. Second, and this is what actually wrecks plans: the rental market. It's brutal, demand far outstrips supply, and landlords usually want an employment contract and payslips, so as a freelancer you'll have to compensate with prepayment, a guarantor, or an overpriced furnished rental. The 2024 lease reform capped the deposit at two months' rent and split the agency commission 50/50 between landlord and tenant, which helps — but confirm the current rules, the law changed recently. Even so, budget the opening hit: roughly 3-4 months' rent before you sleep the first night. Third: the city empties out. Over 200,000 cross-border workers commute in daily and leave again; at weekends and through much of August the centre is quiet, and shops close on Sundays. Fourth: the area around the central station has a visible drug problem and feels uncomfortable at night — it isn't dangerous in daylight, but choose your street carefully if you rent there. Fifth: the weather is grey and rainy much of the year, with cold, dark winters; if you're coming from the tropics, that weighs on you more than you expect. And keep in mind these numbers are in dollars so you can compare cities, but you pay in euros — if you earn in dollars, the exchange rate can shift your budget 10% without warning. One local tip: supermarkets are expensive and many people drive to France or Germany for the big shop, while fuel, alcohol and tobacco are noticeably cheaper here thanks to low excise duties.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
