Lomé

Aprox. 749,700 habitantesApprox. 749,700 people

Lomé is a capital hard against the sea: it stretches along the Gulf of Guinea right on the border with Ghana, with an urban beach lined by coconut palms and a coastal boulevard that organizes the city. It was a prosperous trading port, and you can still feel it in its Grand Marché, dominated for decades by the 'Nana Benz,' the powerful wax-fabric traders. Warm, humid and direct, Lomé blends the bustle of commerce, German and French colonial heritage, and a relationship with voodoo that's very visible in its markets.

Mejor épocaBest time

The main dry season, November to February, is the most comfortable. There are two rainy seasons (the heavy one April to July and a shorter one in autumn). Humid tropical heat is a near-constant given the coastal latitude.

PresupuestoBudget

Low local prices and a stable currency (the West African CFA franc). Lodging and transport for visitors are modest; carrying cash is most practical outside the bigger hotels.

Motorbike taxis (zémidjans) are the dominant way to move and go everywhere; shared taxis also run. Downtown, the market and the coast are close together, and the Ghana border is a short hop to the west.

West Africa's best-known voodoo market: stalls of skulls, bones and plants for traditional-religion rituals. Striking and very specific to this Gulf of Guinea region, a cradle of voodoo.

Lomé's Grand Marché was for decades the empire of the 'Nana Benz,' traders who grew rich on wax fabric and drove Mercedes. It remains the city's great center of textile commerce.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Lomé?How much do you need per month in Lomé?

Lomé is not a nomad base: there's no remote-work scene, no long-stay visa for working online, and almost nobody arrives for fun — they arrive for work. The foreigners living there are aid and development people (GIZ, UN agencies, NGOs), port and trading families (Lebanese and Indian, plus Chinese contractors), regional staff of the institutions headquartered in the city (Ecobank and the BOAD are both in Lomé), missionaries, and Togolese diaspora coming back from France. It works if you're posted there, speak French, and arrive with a contract and evacuation insurance; it doesn't work if you want a nomad community, coworking, or political calm — the same family has run the country since 1967, and protest cycles end with tense streets and the network cut.

Better than you'd expect: Lomé is a landing point for several submarine cables — Google's Equiano cable came ashore there in 2022 — so the capacity exists. Fiber in the center and in the neighborhoods where foreigners live is enough for video calls (plans run from roughly 20 to 100 Mbps, and what you buy on paper isn't always what you get), and city 4G is solid. What kills your call isn't bandwidth, it's power: CEET outages are routine, especially in the hot season, and without an inverter or generator you drop out mid-meeting. The ugly part is political: Togo shut down the national internet during the 2017 protests (the ECOWAS Court later ruled it illegal) and later episodes came with social media restrictions. It isn't daily censorship, but when the streets heat up the network is the first thing squeezed. Install a VPN before you need it.

CoworkingCoworking

Honestly, there is no coworking scene. The one real exception is WoeLab, the Togolese hackerspace/makerspace known for building a 3D printer out of e-waste — it's community and maker workshop more than monthly desks, and it's where you meet the local tech crowd. Beyond that, people who work online work from home or from a hotel lobby — the Hôtel 2 Février tower, visible from anywhere in the city, is the obvious spot — plus a couple of downtown restaurants with decent wifi. Small spaces tied to incubators and donor projects open and close; ask once you land rather than trusting a name you read somewhere. The investment that actually pays off isn't a membership — it's a battery inverter, a backup 4G router, and a good desk with AC in your own place.

Kodjoviakopé is the classic expat quarter: right up against the Ghana border, near the sea, embassies, big houses behind high walls; expensive by Lomé standards and quiet. Baguida and Avépozo, heading east on the Aného road, are for people who want beach and a garden — family houses, weekend hotels, less noise, in exchange for sitting in traffic every day. Nyékonakpoè and the Boulevard du 13 Janvier area (the ring boulevard) are the real center — markets, offices, street life — practical if you don't have a car. Tokoin sits on the high ground near the teaching hospital and the university, a mix of Togolese middle class and students; Agoè-Nyivé, further north, is the cheap sprawl where you rent twice the house for half the price if you can stomach the commute.

ComunidadCommunity

Small, closed, and organized around work rather than affinity: German and French development agencies, UN bodies, NGOs, regional staff from Ecobank and the BOAD, second- and third-generation Lebanese and Indian traders, Chinese contractors, missionaries, and Togolese returning from France. There's no nomad group and no "remote work" events; you get in through introductions, through the Institut Français and the Goethe-Institut (which do run film nights, concerts, and talks), through the gym, or through church. Togolese people are genuinely open and hospitable, but friendship runs through French and through Mina, the street language of Lomé — without working French you stay in the expat bubble, which here is tiny and gets tired of itself fast.

Three things that wreck the plan if nobody warns you. First, rent: landlords normally ask for several months up front in cash — often 6 to 12 — with informal paperwork, so arrive with that cushion or with a local who can negotiate for you. Second, health: malaria year-round, no low season; take prophylaxis, sleep under a net, and treat any fever as a same-day test. Anything serious means evacuation to Accra or Europe, so insurance with evacuation coverage isn't optional. Third, politics and the map: the same family has held power since 1967, the 2024 constitutional change and the 2025 protests brought crackdowns and network cuts, and as a foreigner you have nothing to gain anywhere near a demonstration. The north of the country (Savanes region, on the Burkina Faso border) has jihadist attacks and a state of emergency — don't go up there. Add that the entry visa is days, not months, and has to be extended at the immigration office (there is no nomad visa, and the online process keeps changing — confirm it before you fly); that you pay in CFA francs, a currency pegged to the euro (no inflation shocks, but daily life runs on cash and mobile money — T-Money, Flooz — far more than on cards, with few ATMs and steep fees); and that zems are the fastest way to get around and also the most common way to end up in hospital: bring your own helmet, always.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.

Dónde poner tu base en Lomé, por barrio:Where to base yourself in Lomé, by neighborhood:

Gran Mercado y centro

This is where the 'Nana Benz' reigned with their wax fabrics, and it's still a hive of trade, transport and street life; central and very dense.

The long urban beach and the coastal boulevard running along the city facing the Gulf of Guinea. Currents make swimming dangerous, but it's Lomé's great open space for strolling and watching the sea.
