Lausanne
Aprox. 116,751 habitantesApprox. 116,751 people
Lausanne falls down steep slopes from the medieval centre to Ouchy and Lake Geneva, facing the Savoy Alps. It is the capital of Vaud, home to the International Olympic Committee and a French-speaking university city with notable cultural depth. To understand it without overstating its visitor offer, focus on the level changes between Cité, Flon and Ouchy, the cathedral and everyday relationship with the lake, not only its Olympic image.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Lausanne? How much do you need per month in Lausanne?
Lausanne works as a base if you already earn in francs, euros or strong dollars and your priority is quality of life: the lake, mountains an hour away, flawless transport and probably the best internet you'll ever have. It does not work if you're optimizing for cost — it's one of the most expensive cities on earth, and even a bare-bones budget lands above US$2,500 a month. And the real blocker isn't money: Switzerland has no digital nomad visa, and finding an apartment is a contact sport.

Among the best on the planet, and that's not hype. Fiber covers most of the city and the canton: Salt sells symmetric 10 Gbps for ≈US$60–75/month and Swisscom 1 Gbps for ≈US$75–105, with no data caps. Installation takes anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the building; some older buildings downtown still aren't fibered and run on cable, which still gets you hundreds of megs. Outages are so rare that one makes the local news. 5G coverage (Swisscom, Salt, Sunrise) is complete across the city and holds up even on the train to Geneva, so you can take calls on the move without drama. The only expensive part is mobile: a premium carrier plan starts around ≈US$70/month, which is why most people use the budget brands owned by the same groups (Yallo, Wingo, Lebara) for ≈US$25–45 with unlimited data inside Switzerland. Watch out: those cheap plans charge steep roaming once you leave the country.
CoworkingCoworking
A small but real scene, driven by EPFL, UNIL and the startup ecosystem around the lake. Impact Hub Lausanne, near Flon, is the name almost everyone mentions first; EPFL Innovation Park in Écublens has space too, though it's aimed more at companies and school-linked projects than at a lone freelancer. A flex desk runs ≈US$350–550/month, and a dedicated desk with a locker goes up from there. That said, plenty of freelancers simply don't pay for coworking: EPFL's Rolex Learning Center is open to the public and a lot of people work there, cafés with decent wifi exist, and since any apartment gets serious fiber, working from home is genuinely viable. In Lausanne you pay for coworking for the people, not the connection.
Flon and the centre (Bel-Air, Rue Centrale): where the coworking, the bars and both metro lines are. The most convenient and the most expensive per square metre, and loud Thursday through Saturday. Sous-Gare and Ouchy: between the station and the lake — pretty, quiet, with a view, and very pricey; the favourite area for people who take the train every week. Chauderon, Maupas and Prélaz: central but cheaper and more mixed, ordinary buildings full of people who actually live here year-round, everything walkable or a short bus ride. Renens, Écublens and Chavannes: the western belt, packed with EPFL and UNIL students, with clearly lower rents and 10–20 minutes to Flon on the M1 metro. This is where a normal budget actually stretches, and where most newcomers end up.
ComunidadCommunity
It's a small city — around 140,000 people, roughly 400,000 in the wider agglomeration — with an unusually high share of foreigners: EPFL, UNIL, IMD, the International Olympic Committee and dozens of international sports federations. In practice that means a lot of people passing through just like you, and English gets you almost everywhere in the academic and startup world. But daily life runs in French: the bakery, the doctor, the paperwork, the lease. Without it you'll manage, but you'll always feel slightly on the outside. Meetups exist (tech, running, climbing, language exchanges) and the student turnover makes September the easy month to meet people. What's hard is local Swiss friendship: it's slow, and most people build their circle from whoever arrived the same year they did. There is a Spanish-speaking community — Spanish and Latin American, plus a very large Portuguese community across canton Vaud — but it's considerably bigger in Geneva than here.
First the legal part, and it's what kills most plans: Switzerland isn't in the EU (though it is in Schengen), and there is no digital nomad visa. On most Latin American passports (Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru) you get 90 days in any 180 and that's it; on others (Ecuador, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominican Republic) you need a Schengen visa before you fly — check your own case. To stay longer you need an employment contract, an EU/EFTA passport, or to set up a company here. There's no shortcut, and working remotely on a tourist stay is a grey area you don't want to stretch. Second, housing: the vacancy rate around here sits at roughly 0.5–1%, which is effectively zero. You'll compete with dozens of applications for the same flat, and you'll be asked for an employment contract, a debt-collection record (extrait des poursuites) and a deposit of up to three months' rent in a blocked account; without residency and a local job almost nobody will rent to you except furnished-rental platforms, which charge close to double. Third, health insurance: if you register as a resident you're legally required to take it out within three months, backdated to your arrival, and Vaud has some of the highest premiums in the country — ≈US$450–650/month that almost everyone forgets when doing the math. And three smaller but very real things: everything is priced in francs, so a stronger franc raises your dollar budget on its own; almost everything closes on Sunday except the station shops (shop on Saturday or dinner is bread); and Lausanne is built on a brutal slope — a kilometre on the map can mean 60–100 metres of climbing, so a non-electric bike is a worse idea than it looks.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
