It's an easygoing city, more Malay and less cosmopolitan than Kuala Lumpur, with Teluk Cempedak beach a short hop from the center. It works best as a base: from here you head up to Cherating, a beach village known for turtles and kitesurfing, and to Sungai Lembing, an old tin-mining town tucked into the jungle. East-coast food — rice, fish, Malay flavors — is its greatest everyday pleasure.
