Košice
Aprox. 236,563 habitantesApprox. 236,563 people
Košice is Slovakia's second city and the capital of the country's east, far from Bratislava's bustle. Its pride is a compact old town built around a long square-street, Hlavná ulica, that widens in the middle to make room for the Gothic St. Elizabeth Cathedral, the largest church in Slovakia. It was European Capital of Culture in 2013, which left a lively cultural scene. It's an affordable, pleasant base for exploring eastern Slovakia.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Košice? How much do you need per month in Košice?
Košice works if you want cheap, calm Europe with excellent internet and you don't mind that daily life happens in Slovak. It's Slovakia's second city, with a technical university and a real IT hub (Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions Slovakia is the city's largest private employer), so the infrastructure handles remote work easily and prices are among the lowest in the eurozone. It doesn't work if you need a big nomad community, year-round sun, or direct flights: the international scene is tiny, winter is long and grey, and the airport is small — many people fly via Budapest, Vienna or Kraków.

Among the best value in Europe. Fiber reaches nearly the whole urban area, including the panel-block districts: typical plans run 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps for ≈€15-25/month, with Antik Telecom (a local operator headquartered in Košice), Slovak Telekom and Orange as the normal options. Reliability is very good and outages are rare — the usual problem isn't the network, it's a decade-old router your landlord left in an old flat. Mobile: 4G citywide and 5G across much of it; a prepaid plan with decent data runs ≈€10-15 (truly unlimited costs more), EU roaming included, so you can work from Hungary or Poland on the same SIM. If you're on video calls all day, get fiber in your own name instead of relying on shared building wifi.
CoworkingCoworking
Small but workable scene: a handful of spaces, not dozens. What holds the city up is the IT sector and the Technical University (TUKE), so there are desks and community tied to the tech ecosystem and the university, plus a couple of independent creative spaces. The cultural-side landmark is Tabačka Kulturfabrik, an old tobacco factory turned cultural center with a work area and events — check hours and whether memberships are still offered, since the setup changes. A flex desk runs ≈€80-150/month, and day passes tend to land around ≈€8-12 (confirm it, it varies by space). Plenty of people just work from cafés on Hlavná, but not all of them are laptop-friendly for a full afternoon, and café wifi is decent rather than great.
Staré Mesto (old town): Hlavná, the huge pedestrian main street, with St. Elisabeth's Cathedral; everything on foot, cafés and restaurants, and the priciest rents in town. This is where you want to be for a 2-3 month stay. Sever (north): next to the university and hospital area, green, quiet, 10-15 minutes from the center — a good price/location balance. Terasa (west): the big panel-block district, cheapest option with decent transport (tram and bus) and supermarkets everywhere; ugly outside, functional inside. Nad jazerom (southeast): by the lake, good for running and summer swimming, cheaper flats, but you're clearly out of the center and dependent on transport.
ComunidadCommunity
Harder than in a classic nomad hub. Slovak is the everyday language; English works fine with under-35s and the IT crowd, but don't count on it in shops, paperwork or with older people. There are foreigners, just not nomads: they're engineers at the IT companies and international medical students at UPJŠ, who study in English. Spanish speakers: almost none — there's no Latino community to land in. The real meetups are technical (dev, data) plus cultural events at Tabačka, and there are language exchanges. Slovaks start reserved and turn very warm, but you have to build it: without a coworking, a gym or a club, you can go weeks without talking to anyone.
Winter is the real filter: November to March, grey, below freezing, short days — and heating blows up your utility bill. Energy prices have moved a lot since 2022 and government measures keep changing, so ask the landlord for a full year of actual bills before signing, not the summer average. Contracts: typically one year with 1-2 months' deposit, many landlords write only in Slovak and several prefer not to rent to short-term foreigners — bring someone who can translate. Paperwork: the foreigners' police (cudzinecká polícia) is slow and works in Slovak. If you're non-EU, Schengen's 90-days-in-180 applies; Slovakia has no dedicated digital nomad visa and the usual route is a business residence permit (živnosť) — confirm that with a local lawyer, the rules shift. Flights: Košice airport is small with few routes, so for cheap options people head to Budapest (about 3 h) or Kraków (3-4 h). Safety: the city is calm and walkable at night; the marginalized Luník IX settlement isn't on the rental market and isn't a place to wander. Summer comfortably reaches 30-33 °C, with higher spikes, and many older flats have no air conditioning. And mind the exchange rate: everything here is paid in euros and the USD figures are an approximate conversion.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
