Kingston
Aprox. 937,700 habitantesApprox. 937,700 people
Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the birthplace of reggae: Bob Marley recorded here, Trench Town and the sound system were born here, and music pours out of every corner. It sits on one of the world's largest natural harbours, between the Caribbean Sea and the Blue Mountains, whose slopes produce some of the planet's priciest coffee. The city splits between the historic, commercial Downtown by the harbour and the more modern Uptown (New Kingston), with hotels and nightlife. It's warm, intense and authentic, best navigated with sense about which areas you're in, but with a cultural energy few Caribbean capitals match.
Mejor épocaBest time
December to April, the dry season, is ideal; it's hot and humid year-round. Hurricane season runs June to November.
PresupuestoBudget
Pricier than Central America, being an island that imports heavily. Budget 1,200-2,000 USD/month; street food (patties, jerk) is the cheap route.
EntradaEntry
Many nationalities enter visa-free as tourists. Check your own case and passport validity before flying.
You use taxis (red-plate route taxis are shared; charters are private) and apps. Long distances and heat make walking far impractical.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Kingston? How much do you need per month in Kingston?
Kingston works if you want a Caribbean base where your whole day happens in English, the music and food are on another level, and you don't mind a car-dependent city split by neighborhood: people live "uptown" (Kingston 5, 6, 8, 10), full stop. It doesn't work if you're after the classic cheap, walkable nomad hub — it isn't one. Furnished uptown rent is often quoted in US dollars and feels closer to a mid-sized US city than to Medellín, electricity is among the priciest in the Caribbean, and the coworking and nomad scene is small. This is a city for people who came for Jamaica itself, not for cheap sun and wifi.

Fiber (mainly from Flow, the most widespread provider) covers uptown well, with residential plans of 100 Mbps and up — plenty for a day of video calls. In older buildings or less central areas you may only get cable or DSL, so ask which technology actually serves THAT address before signing, not what the provider advertises. The real weak point isn't the signal, it's the power: outages happen and get serious during storms and hurricane season, and without a backup (a UPS or a big power bank) you lose internet even when the fiber is fine. Digicel and Flow 4G coverage is solid across the city and works well as plan B — keep enough mobile data to hotspot through an outage.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is small and nothing like Medellín or Bali: a handful of flexible office spaces in New Kingston, international serviced-office chains among them, plus some activity tied to the downtown creative and startup world, where the nonprofit Kingston Creative drives the Art District. These projects open, move, and close, so assume you'll have to phone around to confirm what's still running and at what price before you count on it. In practice most people work from home, from a New Kingston hotel lobby or café, or from uptown coffee shops where a specialty Blue Mountain coffee runs ≈US$3–5. If you need a coworking with a daily, active community, Kingston will disappoint you.
New Kingston (Kingston 5) is the business core: hotels, restaurants, banks, and the most walkable stretch you'll find; pricey and noisy, but the one area where you can live without a car. Liguanea and Barbican (Kingston 6 and 8) are the favorites for people staying months — residential, with supermarkets and plazas, calmer, and 10–15 minutes from everything. Mona, next to the UWI campus, draws academics and younger people and tends to be a bit cheaper. Higher up, Norbrook, Cherry Gardens, and Hope Pastures are leafy, upscale, and basically car-mandatory. Downtown Kingston has the cultural energy, the waterfront, and the Art District, but as a place to LIVE it's a different conversation: research it street by street with locals before you even consider it.
ComunidadCommunity
The huge upside: everything happens in English, so from day one you understand and are understood (patois is its own thing, but you pick it up by ear and people code-switch for you). Jamaicans are sociable and direct, and social life revolves around music and food: Sunday brunches, sound system events, Sunday dub and reggae sessions, Emancipation Park, Devon House. What barely exists is a nomad circuit — don't expect weekly remote-work meetups or a big Spanish-speaking community; Spanish is hardly used day to day. Coming from Latin America, plan on making Jamaican friends rather than falling into an expat bubble. The most useful entry points are the creative and startup world, the gym, and anything connected to UWI Mona.
Safety is the conversation you have to have honestly: Jamaica has had one of the region's highest homicide rates for years — it dropped notably in recent years but is still high — heavily concentrated in specific communities and tied to gangs, not aimed at foreigners. The practical result is that you live by neighborhood: uptown life is normal, and there are areas you simply don't go, not at night and not "to explore." Ask locals, not the internet, and don't walk at night where you don't know the ground. Note too that states of emergency and zones of special operations have been declared in certain parishes, with more military checkpoints than you'd expect. Beyond that: electricity is expensive (AC can add hundreds a month), the city runs on cars and taxis and Uber doesn't operate here the way it does elsewhere, so find a driver you trust instead of flagging cars on the street; sound system noise is real and loud into the early hours. Hurricane season runs June to November: Beryl (2024) and above all Melissa (2025, which devastated the west of the island) left Jamaica rebuilding, so confirm the actual state of the building and the power supply before signing a long lease, and ask about a generator or backup. On immigration: you normally enter as a tourist with a stay granted at the airport (often up to 90 days, at the officer's discretion), working remotely on that is a gray area, and I'm not aware of a functioning Jamaican digital nomad visa; confirm your own case directly with PICA, the immigration agency.
