That confluence, the Mogran, defines the city, which is really three joined by bridges: Khartoum, Khartoum North (Bahri) and Omdurman, the most traditional. It sits deep in the Sahel, with an extreme desert climate and a brief summer rainy season. Important: since 2023 Sudan has been at war, devastating the capital; it is not a viable destination and this entry is geographic and historical context only.
