Honiara

Aprox. 56,298 habitantesApprox. 56,298 people

Honiara stretches along Guadalcanal’s north coast around Mendana Avenue, the harbour and market, with nearby hills and visible memory of the Pacific campaign. For a first reading, connect Point Cruz, Kukum, Honiara Central Market, Vilu War Museum: daily trade, linear growth and wartime sites frame a capital with limited infrastructure. Signage and transport are uneven; battlefield visits should be made with a verified local guide.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Honiara? How much do you need per month in Honiara?

Honiara isn't a nomad base, and that's worth saying up front: the people living there arrived on a contract — Australian and New Zealand aid, UN and NGOs, tuna and fisheries, logging, missions, embassies — or they're part of the Pacific diaspora. There's no remote-work scene, no coworking, no cafés full of laptops: there are project offices and people who go home at four. It works if you have a real reason to be in Solomon Islands (a project, world-class WWII wreck diving, family ties); it doesn't work if you wanted a cheap Pacific island to work remotely from, because expensive it is — cheap it isn't. Treat every figure below as an order of magnitude: the market is tiny, most things are found through contacts, and prices move with the exchange rate and with whichever ship comes in.

The Coral Sea submarine cable, laid from Sydney to Port Moresby and Honiara, changed life here from 2019–2020 on: before that it was all satellite and brutally expensive. Today a decent fixed line in town gives you roughly 10–30 Mbps down on a good day — fine for video calls — with noticeably weaker upload, and almost every plan carries a data cap at a high price. On mobile, Our Telekom and bmobile-Vodafone give reasonable 4G inside Honiara and basically nothing once you leave the urban strip of Guadalcanal. The real enemy isn't bandwidth, it's power: outages are frequent, so anyone working seriously keeps a UPS, a battery or a generator. I'm not aware of systematic internet censorship; there was an official announcement in 2020 about blocking Facebook that was never enforced, and curfews with movement restrictions during the 2021 unrest.

CoworkingCoworking

There is no coworking in Honiara, and there's no point dressing that up. People here work from their project office, from home, or from a hotel lobby or terrace with wifi: Heritage Park, Coral Sea and King Solomon are the names that come up, and there you're paying for coffee, not a desk. Downtown there are a handful of cafés that act as de facto morning offices for NGO staff — Lime Lounge is the one that always gets mentioned, though check on arrival that it's still open, since business turnover is high. Another quiet option with connectivity is the University of the South Pacific campus library in Honiara. If you need a meeting room, the local solution is renting one at a hotel by the hour or the day.

Tasahe and Lengakiki, on the western ridges, are where contract expats actually live: houses with a yard, a wall, a water tank and some breeze — you're paying for the view and the security. Vavaya Ridge is the same idea, a bit closer to town, with a lot of embassy and agency staff housing. Point Cruz is the real downtown — Mendana Avenue, the hotels, the banks, the Yacht Club, the offices — walkable by day, barely residential and dead at night. East of there, Kukum, Naha and Panatina are local and university neighborhoods: cheaper and much closer to everyday Solomon Islander life, but very few newly arrived foreigners start there without a contact to bring them in.

ComunidadCommunity

The foreign community is small and fairly closed along work lines: Australian and New Zealand aid people, UN and NGO staff, embassy folks, missionaries, dive-resort owners and technicians, and Chinese and Southeast Asian traders who have been there for decades. You'll meet everyone within two weeks and everyone will know who you are: the Point Cruz Yacht Club is the classic Friday gathering point, and beyond that it's diving, golf, rugby or futsal. The good part is that Solomon Islanders are genuinely open and hospitable, and four words of Pijin — the country's lingua franca — open half the town for you. The tricky part is that local social life runs through the church and through wantok, your family and language network, and an unattached foreigner sits a little outside that logic unless someone adopts you.

Three things, in this order. One: malaria. Guadalcanal is a genuine transmission zone, falciparum included, and Solomon Islands carries one of the heaviest burdens in the Pacific; you go with prophylaxis, a net and repellent, and it's not a brochure footnote. Add that advanced medical care doesn't exist in-country — anything serious gets flown to Brisbane — so insurance with air evacuation is literally the first thing you buy, and get it in writing that Solomon Islands is covered. Two: safety and politics. You don't walk around Honiara at night, full stop; and the city has a history of flare-ups — the November 2021 riots and looting that burned much of Chinatown are the fresh example — tied to Malaita–Guadalcanal tensions and the government's geopolitical alignment after switching recognition from Taiwan to China in 2019. It isn't war, but it is a city that can go under curfew inside 48 hours. Three: money and paperwork. Everything runs in Solomon Islands dollars and cash is king: many foreign cards won't work outside hotels and the bigger supermarkets, and ATMs run dry over long weekends. There's no digital nomad visa: several nationalities get a visitor permit on arrival for around three months — check your own case before flying — but working, even for a client abroad, formally falls on the work-permit side. And leaving is expensive with few flights (Brisbane, Nadi, Port Moresby), so a last-minute change of plans hurts.
