Gitega
Aprox. 41,000 habitantesApprox. 41,000 people
Gitega is Burundi’s political capital on a green inland plateau, tied to the former monarchy and the traditions of the royal drum. For a first reading, connect Centro de Gitega, Mushasha, Musée National de Gitega, Santuario de tambores de Gishora: the museum, market and nearby sanctuary offer a more tangible cultural reading than its recent administrative role. Visitor infrastructure is small and conditions in the country require checking security and transport advice before departure.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Gitega? How much do you need per month in Gitega?
Gitega isn't a nomad base, and that's worth saying up front: it's been Burundi's political capital since 2019, in one of the poorest countries on earth, with no remote-work scene, not a single coworking space, and a cash economy where your foreign card simply won't work. The people actually living here are Burundian civil servants, NGO and UN staff who followed the ministries, missionaries and the occasional consultant; most embassies and most foreigners stayed in Bujumbura, about two hours away by road. The numbers below are cheap and useful as a reference for local life, but they're the budget of someone with a contract and an employer behind them — and they swing so much with the exchange rate that you have to confirm them on arrival.

Almost everyone connects over mobile data (Lumitel, Econet Leo, Onatel); fiber exists mainly in Bujumbura and reaches Gitega only partially, expensively and mostly in offices. Assume a few megabits as the normal case, worse in the evening: fine for email, messaging and a video call with the camera off, but don't count on uploading heavy files daily. Power cuts are routine, so anyone working seriously keeps a battery, inverter or solar panel and a backup SIM from a second carrier. Burundi has a track record of social-media blocks and network disruptions around elections and periods of political tension: plenty of people use a VPN, but use it with judgment and don't turn your political opinions into public content from here.
CoworkingCoworking
There is no coworking in Gitega — not one space, and that's not an oversight here: the demand doesn't exist. Whoever needs an office has one because their NGO, ministry or agency provides it; everyone else works from home or in the lobby of one of the few downtown hotels with a generator and wifi, paying for drinks. The country's handful of tech hubs and innovation spaces are in Bujumbura, and even there the scene is tiny. If your plan depends on a desk with solid internet and people around you, this isn't the place.
Start with the honest part: Gitega has no "expat neighborhood". The handful of foreigners here cluster in the center and its immediate edges, near the ministries, the market and the cathedral — that's where the hotels, the few shops with imported goods and the least-bad electricity are. Of the central areas, Magarama and Nyamugari are the names you'll hear most, and where you'll find formal rentals: walled houses with a gate, the format NGOs look for. Move outward and it turns quickly into local and semi-rural residential areas — cheaper, less infrastructure, essentially no foreigners. And the full truth: plenty of people who work with the government in Gitega keep their home in Bujumbura and commute, so the country's real expat neighborhood is still Rohero and the Kiriri and lakeside areas in the economic capital.
ComunidadCommunity
Gitega's foreign community can be counted on one hand and is almost entirely professional: NGO and UN staff, missionaries and religious orders with a long history in the region, a few bilateral aid workers and consultants passing through. Everyone knows everyone, they overlap at the same two or three hotels, and invitations come through direct contact — not Meetup, not nomad groups, because there are none, not even close. Burundians are hospitable and French plus a bit of Kirundi genuinely opens doors; English only works inside the NGO bubble. If you arrive with no job and no local project anchoring you, loneliness isn't a risk — it's what will happen.
Money is the first thing that wrecks your plan: Burundi runs on cash, foreign cards and international ATMs are unreliable or outright useless, and there's a large, persistent gap between the official Burundian franc rate and the parallel market — any dollar budget swings wildly depending on how you change money, so treat the figures here as orders of magnitude and confirm them on the ground. Bring clean, new US$100 bills: worn or marked ones get refused or changed at a worse rate. Most of the international sanctions from the 2015 crisis have been lifted, but the banking system is still effectively cut off from the world and moving or withdrawing money is a headache. Add chronic fuel shortages with queues and a black market, endemic malaria, and very limited healthcare: anything serious means evacuation to Nairobi or Kigali, and without evacuation cover, don't come. Yellow fever certificate: confirm before you fly, it gets asked for at the border. There's no nomad visa; you enter on an e-visa or visa on arrival through Bujumbura airport, the only international airport, and extensions and residence permits go through the immigration police, with paperwork and fees worth asking about in advance. Watch the overland route too: the border with Rwanda has been closed for long stretches, so don't assume a Kigali–Gitega crossing without checking that same week. And one rule that isn't folklore here: don't photograph government buildings, military, police or the airport, and stay out of political conversations — there are checkpoints, there are party youth structures in the neighborhoods, and a foreigner asking questions gets noticed. None of this makes Gitega impossible for someone arriving with a clear purpose; it just isn't a place you improvise.
