¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Gabes? How much do you need per month in Gabes?
Gabès is one of the cheapest places you could realistically live on a remote salary — less than a room costs in many European cities — and it has something unusual: a seaside oasis, often described as the only coastal one on the Mediterranean. The catch isn't the price, it's the phosphate-chemical complex sitting right next to town: it's a real, recurring source of local protest and the reason I wouldn't recommend it as a long-term base if you care about the air you breathe. It works if you're coming for a specific project, job or family and staying months; it doesn't work if you want a nomad community, coworking or international life, because there isn't one here.

Copper ADSL is still the norm across much of the city: expect roughly 4-20 Mbps real with weak upload, which is what will hurt if you send big files or stream video. Fibre (FTTH) from Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo, Orange and Topnet exists in parts of the centre, but coverage is building-by-building: before signing a lease, ask whether that specific building is already connected — it completely changes your daily life. Mobile 4G is well covered and cheap, and works as a genuine backup for video calls. The grid is reasonably stable — don't expect daily blackouts — but summer heat peaks bring dips and occasional outages; if your work can't drop, keep a battery and a hotspot ready.
CoworkingCoworking
Straight up: I have no knowledge of a working coworking space in Gabès. Tunisia's coworking scene is concentrated in Tunis, and to a lesser degree Sfax and Sousse. The realistic setup here is working from home and using downtown cafés for a change of scene — though many Tunisian cafés are loud, with football on the TV and weak wifi, so don't count on them for calls. If something turns up tied to the University of Gabès or an incubator, the typical Tunisian price would be around ≈US$50-80/month, but verify it on arrival rather than treating it as a given.
There is no "expat neighbourhood" in Gabès — the few foreigners are technicians and engineers tied to industry and people passing through the university, and they live mixed in with everyone else. Practically: Centre-ville, the most walkable area, with shops, banks, the louage station and the best odds of fibre. Jara, the old quarter beside the oasis, with more character and old houses but patchier housing stock. Menzel, across the wadi, residential and quiet, good value if you don't mind taking taxis. Chenini, out toward the oasis, green and much quieter, for people who want the palm grove at the door. Ghannouch, to the north, is where the chemical complex sits: it's cheap for a reason — don't live there.
ComunidadCommunity
Daily life runs in Tunisian Arabic (derja); French gets you through banks, paperwork and conversations with educated people, and English works mainly with students and younger folks. There are no nomad meetups, no expat groups, no Spanish-speaking community: if that's what you're after, this isn't the city. What there is, is genuine hospitality — you get invited for coffee and into homes surprisingly easily — plus the University of Gabès, your best doorway into meeting younger, multilingual people. For an actual nomad scene you'd head up to Tunis (≈5-6 h by louage, about 400 km) or over to Djerba/Zarzis, which see more foreigners thanks to tourism.
There's one warning above all the rest: pollution. Gabès lives alongside a large phosphate-processing chemical complex whose waste (phosphogypsum) has been dumped into the gulf for decades; there are persistent complaints of gas smells, respiratory problems and local protests, especially in Ghannouch and the areas near the plant. This isn't an internet rumour, it's the city's defining political issue. If you have asthma or you're bringing kids, think twice; if you go anyway, live far from the complex and toward the oasis side. Beyond that: summer is harsh, with heatwaves of 35-40 °C and the chehili blowing off the Sahara, so budget for air conditioning. Dinar prices climb fast — Tunisia has had high inflation for years — so treat the figures above as an order of magnitude, not a fixed quote. The dinar is a closed currency: you can't take it out of the country or get it abroad, and you can only reconvert part of it on the way out, so you'll handle a lot of cash; cards work in supermarkets and hotels, not in the market. Rentals are closed on a handshake or a loose contract and often want several months upfront; there's almost no short-term furnished rental market, so negotiate in person and be wary of paying in advance from abroad. On visas, Tunisia has no digital nomad visa: most Western and Latin American passports enter visa-free for 90 days and overstaying is settled as a fine on departure — plan your stay around that and confirm your own case with the consulate.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
