Funafuti
Aprox. 4,492 habitantesApprox. 4,492 people
Funafuti is an atoll rather than a conventional city; most people and services line the narrow island of Fongafale. For a first reading, connect Vaiaku, Senala, Funafuti Conservation Area, Funafuti airfield: lagoon, runway and community life explain a territory with minimal land. Connectivity is fragile, water and waste matter, and the marine conservation area requires a boat and local permission.
Mejor épocaBest time
Heat and humidity vary little through the year; favour relatively drier months and leave room for weather-related sea delays.
PresupuestoBudget
Lleva reservas y margen.Remoteness dominates the budget: reaching it, securing lodging and covering disruption cost more than daily life. Carry bookings and a buffer.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Funafuti? How much do you need per month in Funafuti?
Si te llama, andá con un motivo concreto —trabajo, proyecto, investigación—, alojamiento arreglado de antemano y efectivo de sobra; no a "probar un mes de nómada".Funafuti isn't a nomad base, and that belongs in the first sentence: it's the capital of an atoll of roughly 6,000 people, with no remote-work scene, no coworking, satellite internet, and a cash economy where your card is close to useless. The people actually living there are aid and development staff (Australia, New Zealand, UN agencies, the Taiwanese embassy), fisheries people, climate and adaptation project staff, and Tuvaluans themselves. If it pulls at you, go with a real reason — a job, a project, research — with housing arranged in advance and plenty of cash on you, not to "try a month of nomad life".

Tuvalu has no submarine cable: everything comes in by satellite, with the latency and data caps that implies. Don't expect fibre numbers — think a few shared megabits: fine for email, documents and voice calls, but long video calls or uploading heavy files is a gamble, and quality drops at peak hours. Starlink has changed the picture across several Pacific islands and may well be available here now, but I can't vouch for the current situation in Tuvalu — confirm it before committing to a client. Mobile (TTC, the state operator) covers Fongafale reasonably and degrades fast beyond the main islet. No network censorship, but power cuts will take your router down with them.
CoworkingCoworking
There's no coworking, no laptop-friendly cafés, nothing of the sort. You work from your room, from the house you rent, or from a borrowed office if you arrive with a counterpart (government, agency, project). The University of the South Pacific campus in Funafuti and the hotel at Vaiaku are the closest thing to "a table with a power socket", and neither works as an actual coworking space or guarantees you a connection. I won't dress it up: that infrastructure just doesn't exist here.
Everything happens on Fongafale, the long islet with the airstrip. Vaiaku is the administrative core: government, airport, the hotel, agency offices — that's where most foreigners who come for work end up. Alapi and Fakaifou are dense residential areas where houses get rented through personal contacts. Senala and Lofeagai sit a bit further north, quieter and less crowded. Beyond them, Teone and Tengako are essentially rural with almost no services. The "good neighborhood / bad neighborhood" framing doesn't apply here: the only thing that changes is how close you are to the offices and the wharf.
ComunidadCommunity
Within a week you'll have met literally everyone. The foreign community is a few dozen people: Australian and New Zealand aid staff, the Taiwanese embassy, UN agencies and climate projects, fisheries observers, the odd volunteer and a few long-term mixed couples. There is no nomad community at all. Real social life is Tuvaluan: church, community gatherings at the falekaupule, and the airstrip at dusk, which becomes the island's public square when no flights are due. People are warm and the isolation means you get folded in fast — but it also means there's no privacy and nowhere to escape to.
Four things wreck people's plans here. One: cash. The National Bank of Tuvalu is the only bank, the currency is the Australian dollar, and everything is paid in cash; don't count on withdrawing with a foreign card or paying by plastic — arrive carrying the cash for your whole stay, plus a plan B if you run out. Two: housing. Land is communally held and there are no listings and almost no accommodation; if you don't arrive with a room or house arranged through a contact, you may find nothing beyond a handful of hotel rooms. Three: water and health. Water is rainwater collected in tanks, there's no aquifer, and in a drought rationing is real; the hospital in Funafuti covers basics, so anything serious means a medical evacuation to Fiji — insurance with air evacuation, no exceptions. Four: getting out. A few flights a week on a single route from Fiji; a cancellation or bad weather strands you for days, and king tides flood parts of the islet. Add that entry is visa on arrival for roughly a month (there's no nomad visa) and that on Sundays the island stops for church — respect it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
