¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Francistown? How much do you need per month in Francistown?
Francistown is Botswana's second city: a commercial and mining hub of roughly 100,000 people in the northeast, about ninety minutes from the Zimbabwe border — and it is not a nomad destination. It works if a contract, a mining project or an NGO brings you here, or if you want a cheap, quiet, English-speaking base for the northeast (Nata, the Makgadikgadi pans and the Tuli Block are a couple of hours away; Kasane and Chobe are half a day's drive). It does not work if you want a remote-work community, coworking or generous internet: there is no nomad scene here, mobile data is expensive for what it delivers, and the power goes out more often than you'd like. The figures below are rough conversions from pula (BWP) — the rate moves, so treat them as orders of magnitude, not fixed prices.

Fibre and fixed wireless do exist — BTC is the dominant operator and advertises plans in the tens of megabits — but coverage depends on your block: Riverside, Gerald Estate and the newer areas usually have a line; older plots and the edges of town fall back to fixed LTE. In practice expect something like 10-40 Mbps real, fine for video calls and uploads, not for living on 4K streaming, and check the actual speed at the exact address before you sign. Mobile: Mascom has the widest footprint, Orange and beMobile (BTC's mobile brand) are fine inside town and drop off fast once you're on the highway. The real weak spot is power: Botswana imports part of its electricity and has had rotating cuts when generation stumbles — not daily, but they happen — so a UPS for the router and a charged laptop is local habit, not paranoia. Mobile data is expensive per gigabyte by regional standards.
CoworkingCoworking
Let's be straight: there is no real coworking in Francistown. I don't know of a single space with a monthly membership, a dedicated desk and a community the way Cape Town or Nairobi have, and I'm not going to invent one. What remote workers here actually do is build a home office (an extra room is cheap, which is why renting a 2-bed makes sense) and go out to cafés and hotel lobbies when they need a change of scene: the city hotels — Cresta Marang and the Adansonia are the names that always come up — have wifi and tables where nobody rushes you, and the malls around Blue Jacket Street are good for a couple of hours. If someone offers you a "coworking membership" here, ask exactly what's included before you pay.
Riverside and Tati River Plots are where almost everyone from outside ends up: walled houses, big plots, quiet, near the Tati river and minutes from the centre. It's the priciest part of town and still cheaper than a small flat in Gaborone. Gerald Estate and Satellite are local middle-class areas, well connected and better value if the high wall doesn't bother you. Donga and Monarch are cheaper and noisier, close to the commercial bustle. The newer extensions to the south and west have more recent building stock but leave you dependent on a car. Most of the rental market moves through local agents and word of mouth; online listings show only a small slice of what's out there, so walk the area before you commit.
ComunidadCommunity
There are no nomad meetups and no Slack group waiting for you; that part simply doesn't exist. The foreign community is small and organised around work: mining, health, NGOs, cross-border trade with Zimbabwe. You meet people at the gym, at church, in running or cycling groups, at weekend braais and at sports clubs — not at a coworking desk. The big advantage is language: English is official, and you'll use it at the bank, with your landlord and at the supermarket without friction; day-to-day street language is Setswana and, in this part of the country, a great deal of Kalanga. There's a large Zimbabwean community thanks to the nearby border. Spanish speakers: essentially none — if you want Spanish, it'll be over video call.
Four things before you book. One, immigration: Botswana has no digital nomad visa. Many nationalities get up to 90 days visa-free with extensions at Immigration, but that's a tourist stamp; to stay properly or work you need a permit, and without residence you'll find opening a local bank account a headache — which complicates renting, since landlords typically want a deposit and a one-year lease. Immigration paperwork is moving onto online platforms, so confirm the current requirements before you travel rather than trusting an old forum post. Two, the climate: October to December gets genuinely hot, with days above 38 °C, and the rainy season (November to March) brings hard storms that take the power with them; winter nights actually get cold and almost nothing here is heated. Three, physical connectivity: Francistown's airport is small and essentially domestic — to fly abroad you'll route through Gaborone or drive to Johannesburg — and without your own car the city shrinks fast: combis cover the main routes and not much else, and don't count on ride-hailing apps working here the way they do in Gaborone. Four, the practical stuff: Botswana is one of the calmer countries in the region, but house break-ins are a real thing — hence every wall and alarm — and the centre around the combi rank and Blue Jacket after dark isn't a place to wander distracted. For anything serious medically people end up in Gaborone or Johannesburg; the local referral hospital is Nyangabgwe, and insurance that covers evacuation is worth having.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
If Francistown grabs you, next comes the practical stuff: real cost of living by neighborhood, where the coworking and good internet are, the nomad community and which visa lets you legally stay past 90 days. We're building the long-stay guide for Botswana.
