¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Évora? How much do you need per month in Évora?
It doesn't work if you want a nomad scene, networking, or nightlife: it's a university town of a little over 50,000 where daily life happens in Portuguese and the foreign community is tiny compared to Lisbon, Porto, or the Algarve. Add a small rental market tied to the student calendar, and landing a furnished place for 3-6 months is harder than the "cheap city" label suggests.

Portugal delivers here: fiber covers nearly the whole city via MEO, NOS, and Vodafone, with several-hundred-Mbps plans (up to 1 Gbps in newer areas), often symmetric, for about €35-45 a month as part of a bundle. Video calls are a non-issue and outages aren't a thing. Mobile 4G/5G is solid in town and along the road to Lisbon. The catches are bureaucratic, not technical: signing up for fiber in your own name requires a Portuguese NIF and usually a local bank account, and contracts typically lock you in for 12 or 24 months with an early-exit fee — for a short stay, negotiate internet included in the rent. Inside the walls, some old buildings have patchy wifi thanks to thick stone: test the signal in the room where you'll actually work before you sign.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is minimal and honestly isn't the reason to come. There are a handful of spaces tied to the Universidade de Évora ecosystem and local incubators, plus the odd small private spot, with monthly desks running roughly €90-130; I won't hand you names because they open and close and I don't want to send you to a locked door — find them once you're here, or ask at the tourist office and around the university. The reality is that nearly every remote worker here works from home and uses center cafés to break up the day, and with this fiber that works fine. If your work depends on being surrounded by other remotes, Lisbon is 90 minutes away and Évora will feel thin.
Centro Histórico (inside the walls) — the prettiest and most walkable part, everything ten minutes away, but also the priciest, the most tourist-heavy by day, and full of old buildings that get cold and damp in winter. Bairro da Malagueira — Álvaro Siza's housing scheme to the west: quiet, residential, softer prices, 20-25 minutes on foot from the center. Horta das Figueiras — the modern south side: newer buildings, big supermarkets, the shopping mall; short on charm but practical, and the best value for furnished flats. Bacelo — north, residential and family-oriented, calm, a good pick if you're driving and want hassle-free parking.
ComunidadCommunity
It's a small town, and that cuts both ways: the café on your corner knows you in two weeks, but there's no ready-made nomad community waiting for you. The social engine is the Universidade de Évora — during term there are students, Erasmus included, and that's where outsiders mix; in summer the city empties and you feel it. The settled foreign population skews older Europeans and a few families, not twenty-somethings with laptops. Daily life runs in Portuguese: hotels, restaurants, and university folks will switch to English, but the bakery, the bank, and the letting agency won't. Spanish gets you understood fairly well (Badajoz is an hour away by car and cross-border traffic is constant), but showing up speaking only Spanish reads as lazy — learn basic Portuguese and doors open fast.
Alentejo heat comes first: July and August highs typically sit at 32-35 °C, with heatwaves touching or passing 40, in a stone city that holds the warmth well into the night. Plenty of older flats have no air conditioning — ask before you sign, it's not a detail. Winter is the opposite: it rarely freezes, but there's rain, damp, and old houses with bad insulation and no central heating, so the power bill climbs and the cold gets indoors. Second, the rental market. It's small and many landlords prefer September-to-June student leases, so summer has listings at tourist prices and by autumn almost nothing is free; renting properly means a Portuguese NIF, proof of income, a couple of months' deposit, and sometimes a guarantor. Third, sort out your NIF before you need it — without it you stall on rentals, banking, and utilities. Fourth, the city walks perfectly, but the surrounding Alentejo doesn't; trains and buses reach Lisbon in about 1h30-2h though with only a few departures a day, and Évora has no commercial flights, so every plane means going up to Lisbon first. Fifth, the obvious one: non-EU visitors get 90 days in any 180 under Schengen and it's counted for real — if you plan to stay, sort the visa before you come, not on the fly. Safety isn't a genuine concern here: Évora is calm, and the bigger risk is boredom on a Tuesday night in November.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
