Its heart is the Citadel, a walled mound inhabited without interruption for thousands of years —one of the world's oldest continuous settlements— rising over the centre and dominating the city. At its foot spread the Qaysari bazaar and a large fountain square. It's a plains city at the foot of the Zagros mountains, more stable and open than the rest of the country, with tea, kebab and notable Kurdish hospitality.
