Founded by Greeks and Romans as Epidamnos-Dyrrachium, it was the western end of the Via Egnatia linking Rome to Byzantium — which is why a Roman amphitheatre still sits in the middle of town. Today it's an honest mix of Italy-bound ferry port, long sandy beach and communist-era blocks: not a perfect postcard, but real, cheap and by the sea.
