Yibuti

Aprox. 623,891 habitantesApprox. 623,891 people

Djibouti City is the capital of the small country of the same name, wedged into the Horn of Africa at the mouth of the Red Sea. It's one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth, with brutal summers, and its whole reason for being is strategic: a key port on the trade route to the Suez Canal and home to several foreign military bases (France, the US and others). French and Arabic are spoken. For travellers the city is mostly a logistics base — the spectacular stuff lies outside, in unique volcanic and salt landscapes.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Yibuti? How much do you need per month in Yibuti?

Djibouti City isn't a nomad base — it's a military, port and aid-sector posting. The people actually living here arrive with a contract: the French, US, Japanese, Italian and Chinese bases; the port that handles the overwhelming majority of Ethiopia's foreign trade; NGOs, UN agencies and embassies, almost always with housing or an allowance covered. A regular remote worker pays European-capital prices for a small city at 40-45 C and heavy humidity half the year, with no coworking scene and no nomad community. Treat the numbers below as orientation: they come from a market built for expats spending someone else's budget, not for someone paying their own rent.

Pure paradox: Djibouti is one of the world's big submarine-cable landing hubs — several systems linking Europe, Asia and East Africa come ashore here — and retail internet is still expensive and mediocre, because Djibouti Telecom is a state monopoly with no competition. In the capital, in expat areas, fiber tends to deliver tens of Mbps (think on the order of 10-50, not gigabit) and holds video calls if the building is properly connected; outside those areas it drops off, and several plans come with data caps, so read the fine print before signing. Mobile 4G works reasonably in the city and thins out fast once you leave it. Power is the weak link: much of the electricity is imported from Ethiopia and outages happen at peak heat, so if your work is calls you want a building with a generator, or at minimum a UPS and a solid backup data plan. And it's a controlled network environment: the country ranks poorly on press freedom, and VoIP call restrictions and occasional service blocks have been reported, especially around political moments. I can't vouch for the state of it month to month, but arrive with a VPN already installed and don't assume WhatsApp calling will always work.

CoworkingCoworking

There's no coworking scene, and saying it plainly saves you the search: the circuit of monthly-membership spaces, events and a remote community you'd find in Nairobi or Kigali simply doesn't exist here. What exists is hotel lobbies and terraces — the Djibouti Palace Kempinski is the classic business-meeting spot with decent wifi, though the coffee costs what a full meal costs elsewhere — plus a handful of cafes in Plateau and Heron with a plug and air conditioning. There have been incubator and entrepreneurship-center initiatives backed by the government and donor programs, but I won't name them: they open, rebrand and close. Ask on the ground if you care. In practice, anyone working remotely here works from home with good AC — and the AC is genuinely the most important piece of work infrastructure in the city.

Heron is the expat neighborhood par excellence: seafront, upscale villas and apartments, the big hotels, supermarkets stocked with imports, and much of the diplomatic housing — pricey, and where nearly everyone arriving on a contract ends up. Haramous sits toward the airport and the US base at Camp Lemonnier: walled villas with gardens, contractor and military families, very quiet and not remotely walkable. Plateau du Serpent is the administrative and embassy area, a notch less polished than Heron but more walkable, with real daytime life. The colonial center (the Plateau, around the main square and Rue de Rome) mixes offices, Yemeni and Ethiopian commerce and some cheaper apartments — that's where you find actual local prices, along with more noise, more heat and fewer services. Balbala, the big working-class periphery, is where most of the city lives and isn't where you'd settle as a foreigner.

ComunidadCommunity

Comunidad nomada: cero. Nomad community: zero. What exists is a small, fairly closed expat community organized by tribe — French military and their families (the longest-established and the most socially active on the civilian side), US personnel from Camp Lemonnier who rarely leave the base, the Japanese and Italian contingents, aid workers and UN agency staff, plus the large Ethiopian, Somali and Yemeni communities that run the commerce and the real city. Meeting people is easy if you come in through a tribe (your NGO, your company, your embassy) and quite hard if you arrive on your own: there are no open meetups to walk into. Where circles actually mix is hotel pools and bars, and the diving and sailing on the Gulf of Tadjoura — the diving is genuinely world-class, and whale shark season, roughly November to February, is the best thing the country has and where you'll make friends. French is the useful language for the expat circle, Arabic and Somali for everything else; with English alone you'll be more isolated than you expect.

Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you

Cuatro cosas concretas. Four concrete things. One: the heat from May to September isn't "warm", it's 40-45 C with sea humidity and nights that never cool — the foreign population empties out in summer, and both your power bill and your mood will feel it; if you come, come between November and March. Two: don't photograph the port, military installations, government buildings, police or the airport — not from a distance, not by accident. This is a country hosting several foreign militaries, and people do get stopped over a photo; it's also not the place to air opinions about local politics in public or online. Three: budget the opposite of what the map suggests — Djibouti sits in the Horn of Africa but costs like Europe, nearly everything is imported, and the Djiboutian franc is pegged to the dollar, so the exchange rate gives you nothing. It's also a cash economy: cards are accepted in little beyond the big hotels and the ATMs that reliably take foreign cards are limited, so don't arrive without a plan B for money. Four: get the paperwork sorted before you fly — most passports need a visa arranged in advance (the system has shifted between visa-on-arrival and e-visa, so confirm with your consulate before booking), and there is no digital nomad visa: people stay here because a company or organization sponsors them. Two more practical notes: in the afternoon half the city stops for khat and you won't get anything official done after one or two, and the region is unsettled — the Bab el-Mandeb strait and the Red Sea have seen tension and attacks on shipping, which makes flights, freight and sometimes insurance pricier and more complicated. And keep medical insurance with evacuation cover current: quality healthcare is limited and anything serious gets handled by leaving the country.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
