Dili
Aprox. 150,000 habitantesApprox. 150,000 people
Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste, strung along the north coast of Timor island between a calm sea and dry hills. It's a small, hot city shaped by two pasts: Portuguese colonialism (which left the language, Catholicism and a few buildings) and the Indonesian occupation that ended with independence in 2002. Life moves slowly here, you hit the beach early, and the boats to Atauro island — some of the best diving in Southeast Asia — leave from the port.
Mejor épocaBest time
Dry season May to November: clear skies, calm sea and the best visibility for diving. December to April is wet and muggy.
PresupuestoBudget
The US dollar is the currency. It's pricier than you'd expect for the region because almost everything is imported; local food is cheap, lodging less so.
EntradaEntry
Many nationalities get a visa on arrival at Dili airport for a fee. Check Timor-Leste's current rules before flying, as they change.
Microlets (numbered, brightly painted minibuses) crisscross town for a few cents; yellow taxis for everything else. The center is walkable.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Dili? How much do you need per month in Dili?
Dili isn't a nomad base: there's no remote-work scene, no real coworking, internet is expensive and weak, and almost everything costs a lot because it arrives by ship from Darwin or Surabaya. The people living there are cooperation staff (Australian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, EU), UN agencies, embassies, NGOs, the Catholic Church, the oil and gas sector and the diaspora — plus a handful of divers hooked on Atauro island, which genuinely is world-class. If you work online and can pick your destination freely, the money you'd burn in Dili buys a far better life in Bali or Kuching; but if you have an actual reason to be in Timor-Leste, the city is livable, quiet by day, and the people are genuinely warm.

This is the weak point and the main reason you won't work online comfortably here. Dili has usable 4G from Telemor, Telkomcel and Timor Telecom — fine for WhatsApp, email and short video calls, but it sags at peak hours, and the country spent years paying some of the most expensive internet in the region because of its dependence on satellite links. Home fixed connections are pricey and mediocre: you can pay three figures a month and still struggle to upload a video. There's been a lot of talk about connecting the country to submarine cable, but don't assume any particular speed jump until you've tested it yourself, and always keep a plan B (data SIMs from two different operators). Power in Dili is fairly continuous by regional standards, but cuts happen, which is why expat houses usually come with a generator or an inverter — ask before you sign. Coverage drops off fast the moment you leave the city. The good news: there is no censorship and no political network shutdowns — Timor-Leste is a democracy with a free press, so you don't need a VPN for anything beyond your own security hygiene.
CoworkingCoworking
Prácticamente no existe. Basically nonexistent. Spaces tied to donor projects and youth incubators have opened and closed over the years, so don't count on any particular one until you see it with your own eyes and it's actually open. In practice people work from home, from a hotel lobby or restaurant (Hotel Timor and the waterfront hotels will let you sit through a morning if you keep ordering), and from the local coffee cafés — Timor-Leste's big export is coffee, and places like Letefoho Specialty Coffee serve genuinely excellent local beans. Budget your "coworking" as ≈US$5–10 a day in coffee and lunch, not as a membership, and assume you'll be tethering off your phone rather than trusting the venue's wifi.
Farol is where most of the embassies and the senior aid crowd sit — up the slope west of the centre, quieter, breezier, the best houses and the highest rents. Lecidere and Bidau, along the waterfront east of downtown, is the practical expat strip: apartments over shops, the hotels, most of the restaurants, everything walkable, and closest to offices. Metiaut / Areia Branca, on the coastal road out toward the Cristo Rei statue, is where people go for a quiet house with a sea view and the diving on the doorstep — you'll need a scooter or car. Comoro, out by the airport and Timor Plaza, is mostly local and much cheaper, with the big supermarkets nearby; it's where you'd live if you want a normal Timorese neighbourhood rather than the expat bubble, and it's dusty and noisy in exchange. Ask about water supply, generator and landlord before signing anything: those three matter far more than the neighbourhood name.
ComunidadCommunity
Tiny and extremely easy to break into — that's the upside. Dili's foreign community is a few thousand people at most: Australian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and EU cooperation, UN agencies, embassies, NGOs, the Catholic Church, the oil and gas sector, Indonesian and Chinese business families, Portuguese-language teachers, and a stubborn little tribe of divers. Show up twice at the same beachfront bar on the Areia Branca strip (Caz Bar is the classic Friday spot) or sign up for a dive weekend and you'll have a social circle inside a fortnight — everybody knows everybody and invitations come fast. The flip side is a revolving door: cooperation contracts run one to three years, so the friends you make keep leaving, and the same forty people at the same four places gets small quickly. Timorese themselves are warm and hospitable; a bit of Tetum goes a long way and gets you out of the bubble faster than anything else. What you won't find: anything resembling a nomad or remote-work meetup.
Medical care is the real dealbreaker: specialist care is very limited and anything serious means an air ambulance to Darwin, so insurance with medical evacuation isn't a nice-to-have, it's the price of admission. Dengue is seasonal and hits hard, and the roads outside town wash out in the December–April rains. Second thing: it's a cash country. Timor-Leste uses the US dollar as its official currency (with local centavo coins for change), which sounds convenient until you find that cards are accepted almost nowhere, ATMs run dry over weekends and holidays, and banking options are thin — carry clean, undamaged notes and keep a buffer. On rentals, many landlords want several months up front in cash: ask before you fall in love with a house. There are no sanctions, no guide requirement, no internal travel permits and no police registration — that's not the issue here. Visa-wise there's no nomad category: most nationalities get a paid visa on arrival at Dili airport for about a month, extendable at Migration, and the land border with Indonesia at Batugade generally needs an application in advance, so don't improvise that crossing; working online on a tourist stamp is the usual grey area. And one that sounds like a joke and isn't: saltwater crocodiles are real, present on Timorese beaches and have killed people. Ask locals which stretch of water is safe today and believe the answer. Finally, keep out of it if martial-arts group clashes flare at night in a given neighbourhood — it's not aimed at foreigners, but you don't want to be standing in the middle of it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
