It's a majority-Muslim city and a heartland of Maguindanao culture, the seat of government for the Bangsamoro autonomous region (BARMM). Its symbol is the Grand Mosque, the largest in the Philippines, funded by Brunei and crowned with golden domes. It's a river-trading city, set apart from the rest of the country by its strong Islamic identity, sultanate history and mix of Moro peoples.
