Conakry

Aprox. 1,767,200 habitantesApprox. 1,767,200 people

Conakry sprawls along the Kaloum peninsula, a narrow tongue of land jutting into the Atlantic, with the rest of the city spreading inland through Ratoma, Matam and Matoto. It's the capital of Guinea and its economic engine: the country runs largely on bauxite, and much of that ore leaves through the port here. The climate is tropical and very humid, with a heavy rainy season from June to November that ranks among West Africa's wettest. This isn't a conventional tourist stop but a working city of heat and its own rhythm.

Mejor épocaBest time

The dry season from December to April is the most manageable: less rain and slightly lower humidity. The rainy season (June to November) brings very heavy downpours.

PresupuestoBudget

The currency is the Guinean franc. Imported goods are pricey, while local market food is cheap. There's no established nomad scene; foreigner hotel rates climb fast.

EntradaEntry

Guinea requires a visa for most nationalities; arrange the e-visa before travel and carry a yellow fever certificate.

Shared taxis and minibuses ("magbanas") are the everyday transport. Traffic on the single exit from the Kaloum peninsula clogs badly at rush hour.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Conakry? How much do you need per month in Conakry?

Conakry isn't a nomad base — it's a work posting. The foreigners living there arrived with a contract: mining (bauxite, and the Simandou iron ore project), aid and NGOs, embassies, religious missions, Lebanese trading families, and returning Guinean diaspora — nearly always with housing, transport and insurance handled by an employer. If you're a regular remote worker looking for somewhere to land, there's no scene waiting for you, no coworking in the sense you know, the power cuts daily for much of the year, the city is a very long peninsula with two or three north-south arteries for everybody, and renting means handing over 6 to 12 months of rent up front, in cash. Treat the numbers below as reference if you're going for work — not as an invitation to move.

The ACE submarine cable lands in Conakry, so international bandwidth exists — everything else is what fails. Home fiber in a good neighborhood can give you ≈10–30 Mbps, enough for video calls, but with drops and nobody coming to fix it fast. Orange's 4G is the most reliable network in the country and plenty of people just live off a mobile router or phone tethering; outside Conakry it degrades quickly. The real issue is power: if your building has no generator or battery inverter, your internet dies when the grid does, and in the dry season that's a daily event. On top of that, Guinea has a track record of restricting social media and throttling bandwidth during political moments — protests, elections, friction with the government — plus signal cuts to broadcasters. Install a VPN before you arrive, and don't file any of this under theoretical if your income depends on being online.

CoworkingCoworking

Si tu vida depende de un coworking barato y confiable, Conakri no te lo da.There's no coworking scene for nomads, and it's fairer to say it plainly: there is no space built for passing foreigners, with a monthly membership and remote workers at the desks. What does exist is a small Guinean tech ecosystem — incubators and hubs for local startups, with Saboutech the name that comes up most, though check it's still running before counting on it, since these initiatives open, move and close — and in any case it's aimed at Guinean founders, not at renting you a desk by the month. In practice, people with office work solve it three ways: their employer's office, home with their own generator, or the lobby and meeting rooms of the big hotels (Kaloum and the Nongo area), where you pay by consumption or by the hour at international-hotel rates. If your life depends on cheap, reliable coworking, Conakry doesn't have it.

Ratoma is where nearly every foreigner actually lives, above all Kipé and Nongo: walled houses and apartments with their own generator and water, close to the handful of supermarkets carrying imported goods and to the big hotels. Taouyah and Lambanyi are the step down — more Guinean, considerably cheaper, same commune. Kaloum, the tip of the peninsula, holds the ministries, banks, embassies and the historic hotels: you work there, but living there means eating the traffic in reverse and having protests and police deployments at your door whenever politics heats up. Dixinn and Camayenne, halfway along, have the university, the Donka hospital and aid-worker housing, and they're the compromise if you work in Kaloum and don't want two hours in a car every morning.

ComunidadCommunity

Nomad community: zero. There is a foreign community and it's tight-knit, but it's a closed circuit of expats on contract: miners and engineers, NGO and UN agency staff, diplomats, missionaries, multi-generation Lebanese traders, and returning Guinean diaspora. Everyone knows everyone, they meet at the same five restaurants, the embassy club, the sports courts and dinners at home — you get in through work or an introduction, not through a Meetup group. French isn't a bonus, it's the entry requirement; without it your social life shrinks to anglophone mining expats. With Guineans themselves the warmth is genuine and the hospitality huge, though the economic gap sits inside every relationship and it's worth walking in with your eyes open.

Guinea has been run since the 2021 coup by the same man, Mamadi Doumbouya, who made the move official through the ballot box at the end of the transition: whenever you arrive, the political climate is tense and protests along the main artery have been put down with deaths. Don't go near a demonstration or film one, and have a plan for curfews and network cuts. Live on cash and Orange Money — international cards work in maybe two hotels, ATMs are few and run out of notes, so arrive with clean dollars or euros to change. Health: yellow fever vaccination is required to enter, malaria is year-round (prophylaxis and a net, no debate), and anything serious means medical evacuation to Dakar or Europe, so evacuation cover is literally what decides how a road accident ends. Budget for fuel crises too: when diesel runs short, your generator and your internet go dark together, and in the dry season power rationing is the norm, not the exception. Paperwork: get the visa before you fly (there is an e-visa system, but confirm with the consulate because it changes), and rent is paid 6 to 12 months up front in cash, so your first month costs several times what this page says. And don't underestimate the peninsula: misjudge the hour and you'll sit two hours between Kipé and Kaloum.
