Lingering coffee, endless bookstores, parrilla and a nightlife that starts when other cities close. ¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Buenos Aires? How much do you need per month in Buenos Aires?
Buenos Aires works if you want a real big city — culture, restaurants, bookstores, nightlife, people who actually talk to you — with solid internet and a nomad scene that already exists. What it no longer is: the bargain it was in 2022-2023. Dollar prices climbed hard through 2024-2025, and a decent Palermo apartment now costs roughly what a cheap European capital does. It doesn't work if you need a stable budget: numbers here move every few months, so treat everything below as an order of magnitude, not a guaranteed price. It also doesn't work if you speak no Spanish — outside Palermo and the tech world, English is limited.

Among the best in South America. The city has fast connections from Telecentro, Flow (formerly Fibertel/Cablevisión), Movistar and several neighborhood providers; 300-500 Mbps plans are standard and run roughly US$25-40 a month, though short-term rentals almost always include it. One caveat: not everything sold as "fiber" actually is — much of Flow's network is coaxial cable, which handles video calls fine but has weaker upload; if you stream or push large files, ask specifically whether fiber reaches the apartment. Overall stability is good. Two concrete warnings: in January and February, during heat waves, there are neighborhood power cuts (Edesur/Edenor) that can leave you hours without internet or elevator — a well-known pattern, not a rumor; and signal in the metro is patchy. On mobile, Personal, Claro and Movistar give solid 4G citywide, with 5G available but partial. Always ask for a real speed test of the apartment before signing, and keep mobile data as your plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is mature and you have real options, mostly in Palermo and the Microcentro. Long-standing names include La Maquinita Co (multiple sites, heavily used by product and startup people), AreaTres and Urban Station, plus WeWork; as with any chain, check which locations are still open before you show up, since they come and go. A flexible desk runs ≈US$130-180 a month and a day pass ≈US$15, though since prices are set in pesos the dollar figure drifts. Beyond that, Buenos Aires has one of the best café cultures in the region and working from cafés is normal — though Palermo spots fill up at lunch and some aren't thrilled about you holding a table for three hours over one espresso.
Palermo (Soho and Hollywood) is the nomad epicenter: specialty coffee, coworkings, parks — and the city's highest prices. Most people start here and many never leave. Villa Crespo sits right against Palermo, walks to all the same places and costs noticeably less (usually 20-30%); it's the smart move if you're staying months. Colegiales and Chacarita are the quieter, slightly cheaper version: an actual neighborhood, good cafés, fewer tourists. Recoleta and Belgrano are grander and more residential, with beautiful buildings and good transport; they work if you want calm and don't mind being away from the nightlife. San Telmo is among the cheapest central options and the most beautiful architecturally, but also the most uneven: excellent blocks next to blocks that feel different after dark.
ComunidadCommunity
Easy — one of the easiest in the region. There's a large, stable foreign community, active nomad groups, tech and product meetups, language exchanges, tango classes, and weekly football games you can join knowing nobody. Porteños are also sociable from the start: friendships form fast and people go out often, though on their own clock — dinner is at 10pm and the night starts at 2am. Daily life runs in Spanish and here you'll genuinely need it: English is common among young Palermo and tech crowds, but not across the rest of the city. Heads up on the accent: locals use "vos" instead of "tú", "ll" and "y" sound like "sh", and lunfardo slang is everywhere; even with good Spanish, expect to ask people to repeat themselves for the first two weeks.
What a friend would tell you before you book the flight. One: budget in dollars and revisit it monthly. Argentina changes economic rules and exchange rates faster than any other city on this list, and a guide from six months ago can be completely out of date. Concretely: currency controls for individuals were lifted in April 2025, so the old "blue dollar" advice and bringing money via Western Union is no longer the automatic answer it once was — you'll exchange much closer to the official rate. Confirm the best way to move money on arrival, from people already there. Two: you'll pay the "foreigner price" on rent. Long local leases are far cheaper, but they require a property-owner guarantor (someone with real estate in the city vouching for you), and as a nomad you don't have one — so you stay in the short-term rental circuit, priced in dollars. On top of that, the rental law was repealed at the end of 2023 and everything is freely negotiated now: term, currency and rent increases depend entirely on the contract you sign, so actually read it. Sign short the first time, and see the apartment in person. Three: safety is about zones and carelessness, not violence. The classic incident is a phone snatched on the street or off a café table; don't walk with it in your hand or leave it out. Avoid Constitución, the area around Retiro, and La Boca beyond Caminito after dark. Four: the weather at both extremes. January-February is humid heat above 35°C with power cuts; June-August isn't European cold, but apartments are badly insulated and barely heated, and you feel it. Five: bureaucracy and visas. You enter for 90 days as a tourist and can request an extension at Migraciones; a digital nomad visa has existed too, but immigration rules tightened in 2025, so check its current status with Migraciones directly rather than with a blog. Any Argentine paperwork is slow with hard-to-get appointments: don't leave anything to the last day.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
