Bridgetown follows the old Constitution River harbour toward Carlisle Bay and the Garrison; its winding streets contrast with other Caribbean colonial grids. For a first reading, connect Centro histórico, The Garrison, Parliament Buildings, Carlisle Bay: the trading port, civic power and British defence form the UNESCO ensemble. The centre works best by day; much evening activity shifts toward the south coast.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bridgetown? How much do you need per month in Bridgetown?
Barbados works if you earn in strong currency and want a calm, English-speaking base with genuinely decent internet and beaches you'll actually use. It does not work if you're chasing cheap: almost everything is imported, the electricity bill bites, and eating out costs about what it does in the US. The nomad scene is small and the island is small too (roughly 34 by 23 km) — great for someone who wants quiet and an easy US-Eastern overlap (same time as New York in summer, one hour ahead in winter), rough for someone who needs a big social crowd and constant novelty.

Better than most of the Caribbean, and one of the real reasons the island works as a base. Flow (Cable & Wireless) is the main fiber provider through the populated coastal belt, and Digicel also offers residential service; home plans typically land in the 100–300 Mbps range and hold up for video calls. Expect to pay ≈US$60–90 a month — good speed at a price that isn't. Mobile 4G is solid across the whole island, including the east coast and the interior. There is 5G, but it's urban and patchy; don't build your setup around it. The real weak point isn't bandwidth, it's power. Outages happen, and during storm season they can last hours (after Hurricane Beryl there were extended cuts). If your income depends on being online, buy a UPS for your router and laptop and keep a mobile data plan as backup — that combination covers you for almost everything short of a hurricane.
CoworkingCoworking
Small scene, and honestly a bit thin for the amount of promotion the island's remote-work visa got. You'll find a handful of spaces on the south coast and in the Warrens office corridor, with flexible desk memberships somewhere around ≈US$150–300 a month. Prices and even which places are still open change — check before you commit to a plan. In practice a lot of remote workers end up working from home, from cafés, or buying a day pass at a hotel to get a pool plus a desk. It works fine if you're independent; if you specifically want the built-out coworking ecosystem of a Medellín or a Lisbon, Barbados is not that. I'm not going to name specific spaces here because turnover in the Caribbean is high and a dead recommendation is worse than none — search once you're on the ground and go see them.
Hastings, Rockley and Worthing (Christ Church, south coast) — this is where most remote workers land. The coast road strings together apartments, supermarkets, gyms, bars and beaches you can actually swim at, and buses to Bridgetown pass constantly. It's the closest thing on the island to "you don't strictly need a car." St. Lawrence Gap — same strip, a notch further, and the nightlife hub. Great for going out, terrible for sleeping: pick a place a couple of streets back from the bars. Oistins (Christ Church) — further east, more local, noticeably cheaper rents. Home of the Friday night fish fry. You'll want a car or patience with buses. Holetown and Paynes Bay (St. James, west coast) — the calm, upscale "Platinum Coast": flat sea, sunsets, expensive rentals and restaurants. Beautiful, quiet, and you'll basically need a car. Warrens / Welches (inland, St. Michael) — the modern office corridor: big supermarkets, the cheapest rents. No sea view, no walkable beach, and you're commuting to everything social.
ComunidadCommunity
The huge advantage: everyday life happens in English. Locals speak Bajan creole among themselves but will switch to standard English with you, so there's zero language barrier for renting, banking or making friends. The scene itself is small. Expect Brits, Canadians, Americans and a handful of Welcome Stamp holders rather than a big international nomad crowd. Socializing is informal rather than organized: beach bars on the south coast, the Friday night fish fry at Oistins, surf crowds at Freights Bay and Bathsheba, running and sports groups. Bajans are genuinely warm but the island is small and social circles are established — expect it to take a few weeks. The Spanish-speaking community is tiny. If part of what you want from a base is speaking Spanish daily, this isn't that place.
Confirma qué aplica a tu pasaporte. It's expensive, and not by a little. Barbados imports almost everything and adds 17.5% VAT on top. Groceries for one person run about ≈US$400–550 a month, for worse selection than you're used to. Budget from there, not from "Caribbean = cheap." The upside: the Barbadian dollar has been pegged at 2 BBD to 1 USD for decades, so a budget you build in dollars stays put. Electricity is the bill that ruins budgets. Fuel is imported and the rate is among the highest in the region. Sleeping with AC every night can add ≈US$150+ a month. Ask any landlord for a recent bill before signing, and value ceiling fans and cross-breeze as if they were money — because they are. Rental prices have two tiers. Anything advertised at a nightly or weekly "tourist" rate will wreck your budget. Ask for a long-stay monthly rate, negotiate for low season (roughly May to November), and expect deposits and terms to be informal — get it in writing. Hurricane season runs June to November. Barbados sits far east and gets hit less often than the rest of the region, but "less often" isn't "never": Hurricane Beryl came through in July 2024 and devastated the fishing fleet in Bridgetown. If you're coming for that window, take travel insurance seriously and know your building's plan. The Welcome Stamp isn't free. The 12-month remote-work visa runs around ≈US$2,000 for an individual and ≈US$3,000 for a family bundle, with a minimum income requirement in the ballpark of US$50,000 a year — check the current figures and requirements before you apply, because they've changed. Many nationalities can also enter as tourists for up to six months, but staying and working on a tourist entry is not the same thing legally. Confirm what applies to your passport. Getting around costs more than you'd think. There's no Uber the way you know it, taxis are unmetered — agree the fare before you get in — and car rentals run roughly ≈US$40–70 a day depending on season, plus driving is on the left. The buses are cheap and cover the island but they thin out sharply at night. Island fever is real. Barbados is about 34 by 23 km. In three months you'll have seen it all, and flying out to anywhere else in the Caribbean is surprisingly expensive. Safety is generally good by regional standards, but downtown Bridgetown empties after dark — don't wander it alone late at night.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
