Benin City is the capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria and one of the most historically important cities in West Africa. It was the heart of the Kingdom of Benin, whose artisans created the famed Benin Bronzes, looted by the British in 1897 and now scattered across the world's museums. The Oba (king) of Benin remains a central figure. The city preserves remnants of its vast medieval earthen walls and moats and today lives on trade, rubber and the region's palm oil.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Benin City? How much do you need per month in Benin City?
Benin City is dirt cheap in dollar terms — the naira lost enormous value after the 2023 float — and daily life runs in English, so if your work is remote and you can absorb daily friction, your money stretches in a way almost no capital city allows. But it isn't a nomad base: there's no nomad scene, home fiber barely exists, the power cuts every day, and rent is paid a full year up front (go the month-to-month shortlet route and add an easy US$150–250/month on top of the numbers here). It works if you have roots here, family, a specific project, or you're coming back from the Edo/Nigerian diaspora; it doesn't work if you just want to plug in a laptop and have everything simply work.

Varía mucho según zona y si tiene generador propioFurnished shortlet by the month (the realistic route if you can't pay a year up front): negotiate monthly, never at the nightly rate. Varies a lot by area and whether it has its own generator≈US$250–350/mes

Lower your expectations: home fiber as you know it elsewhere barely exists here. Nigerian ISPs concentrate their networks in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, and coverage in Benin City is thin and patchy — you check building by building, not neighborhood by neighborhood. What does work is MTN and Airtel 4G: fine for calls and normal work, with clear speed drops at peak hours. Nigeria has 5G, but it's concentrated in the biggest cities; don't count on it here. The fix for serious remote work is Starlink, which is available in the country and does give stable video calls — though confirm availability for your address, since new signups have been capped in saturated areas. And the real bottleneck isn't bandwidth, it's electricity: without an inverter or generator your router dies several times a day no matter what plan you bought. Budget connectivity and power as one line item or you'll drop out of a meeting.
CoworkingCoworking
There's very little, and I won't pretend otherwise. The Edo State government pushed a tech hub in Benin City under the Edo Innovates umbrella, and a small scene of devs and startups grew around it, but it's a local ecosystem tightly tied to state politics — the administration changed in 2024 — so confirm it's still open, what hours, and whether they sell monthly passes before you count on it. Otherwise the norm is working from home, from a hotel lobby or restaurant along Airport Road or Sapele Road, or from a café with a generator. If you do find a monthly coworking pass, expect something like ≈US$20–40/month at local prices; what you'll really pay for isn't the desk, it's the power. Always bring your own hotspot.
Ugbowo es el barrio universitario alrededor del campus principal de la Universidad de Benín: barato, joven, movido, con estudiantes y académicos —bueno si querés vida social, ruidoso si querés concentrarte—.GRA (Government Reserved Area) is the classic area for people with money, agency staff and short-term arrivals: wider streets, walled houses with generators, and the city's handful of serviced places. The Ugbor area — along Ugbor Road — is the newer, growing version of the same profile, with modern apartments. The Airport Road / Sapele Road corridor concentrates hotels, shortlets and commerce, and is where people coming in for a few weeks of work usually land. Ugbowo is the university neighborhood around the University of Benin's main campus: cheap, young, lively, full of students and academics — good if you want a social life, noisy if you want to concentrate.
ComunidadCommunity
There is no nomad community here, full stop. You won't find laptop meetups or a crowd of new arrivals waiting for you; the foreigners around are mostly returning Edo diaspora, missionaries and NGO staff, technical people passing through toward Warri or Port Harcourt, and Lebanese, Indian and Chinese business families who've been in town for years. The huge upside is language: daily life runs entirely in English, and if you pick up a bit of Nigerian Pidgin the city opens right up — no language wall like in half of Latin America or Asia. Real social life runs through church, family and introductions: if someone vouches for you, you're in fast and people are warm and direct; if you arrive with zero contacts, you can spend months fairly alone. The small tech scene is your best door in if that's your field.
First, rent: you pay a full year up front here, sometimes two, plus ≈10% to the agent and ≈10% agreement fee, and getting your deposit back is a fight. That's the number one reason short-stay people end up in shortlets even though the monthly cost is a lot higher. Second, power: outages are daily, not exceptional; without an inverter remote work isn't possible, and generator petrol lost its subsidy in 2023 and it hurts. Third, money: the naira has moved enormously since the 2023 float and food inflation has been brutal, so any dollar figure is a snapshot — check the day's exchange rate before you commit to anything — and your foreign card will fail often, since this runs on cash, bank transfers and POS agents. Fourth, safety: inside the city you live normally with common sense, but Edo's intercity highways — especially Benin–Auchi and Benin–Ore — have a real kidnapping history; never travel those roads at night, and ask locally before any trip. Add heavy rains from April to October with flooding wherever drainage fails, serious malaria risk (net, prophylaxis, don't treat it lightly), and a mandatory yellow fever certificate to enter. And watch the visa: Nigeria has no digital nomad visa — one has been talked about, but don't count on it; you come in on a short-stay tourist or business visa, the e-visa scheme's rules changed recently, so verify the current process and don't overstay by even a day: overstay penalties have been tightened.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
