Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Belize City? How much do you need per month in Belize City?

Belize City works if you need to work in English from the Caribbean, want a country where your money is effectively USD (the Belize dollar is pegged 2:1 to the US dollar), and don't mind living by a few safety rules. Against it: it's expensive for what you get because almost everything is imported, the nomad scene barely exists, and the city has a deserved reputation for violence in certain areas. Most nomads who pick Belize end up living on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker or in San Ignacio, and use the city only for banks, paperwork and flights.

The market is dominated by BTL/Digi, with Smart! as the main alternative, so there's little competition and it shows in the price: you pay a lot by Latin American standards. Fiber and cable are available in the city, with typical residential plans in the ~25 to ~100 Mbps range, which is fine for video calls and uploading files if you buy a decent tier. Mobile 4G coverage in the city is fine; 5G is marginal, don't count on it. What really matters: power cuts and service outages do happen, especially in storm season, and many buildings have no backup generator. If your job can't survive dropping mid-meeting, always keep a mobile-data plan B.

CoworkingCoworking

There's essentially no scene. Forget the Medellín or Mexico City coworking circuit: in Belize City you work from cafés, hotel lobbies and informal shared offices, and what gets advertised as "office by the month" is usually a traditional private office rather than a coworking with a community. Prices swing a lot and come down to direct negotiation, so I won't quote you a monthly rate I can't stand behind — ask when you arrive. If coworking is non-negotiable for you, San Ignacio and Ambergris Caye have far more remote-work activity.

Fort George is the historic waterfront district, with hotels, restaurants and the most walkable feel in the city — it's where nearly every foreigner stays. Newtown Barracks, right next to it, is the coastal strip with the bigger hotels, the seaside walk and the more organized nightlife. Kings Park and Buttonwood Bay are middle-class residential areas heading north, quiet, with full houses and apartments; that's where people who stay for months live. Belama and West Landivar, further north near the university, are the option if you want cheaper rent without ending up in a rough area. The unwritten rule: the Northside is where you settle; the Southside (Yabra, Lake Independence, Mesopotamia) has the gang problems and is not where you go apartment hunting.

ComunidadCommunity

The best thing about Belize for meeting people is the language: English is official and everyone will understand you from day one, even though what you hear on the street is Kriol. One common misconception to correct: Belize does have a lot of Spanish speakers, but Spanish carries far more weight in Corozal, Orange Walk and Cayo than in Belize City, where daily life runs in English and Kriol. The downside is scale: the nomad community in the city is tiny, there's no calendar of meetups or weekly remote-work events, and social life runs through bars, restaurants, church, the marina and diving or fishing trips. You'll make friends with Belizeans and long-term expats rather than people passing through; if you want a rotating nomad scene, it's on Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, not here.

Safety is the issue, not a footnote: Belize City has one of the highest homicide rates in the region, heavily concentrated in specific Southside areas and tied to gangs. In practice that means living on the Northside, not walking at night, taking a taxi instead of "exploring" on foot, and not pulling out your phone on any random corner. Second, money: nearly everything is imported and the grocery bill will sting compared with Mexico or Colombia — and prices are quoted in Belize dollars (BZ$), so always confirm whether the number you're given is BZ$ or US$, because mixing them up doubles your mental bill. Third: heat and humidity all year, an electricity bill that explodes once the AC runs, and a real hurricane season from June to November. Fourth, immigration: the tourist stamp is renewed month by month by paying at Immigration and the fees have changed over the years, so confirm the current amount when you arrive; there's also a digital nomad program ("Work Where You Vacation") that requires proof of high income — on the order of US$75,000 a year — plus health insurance, but verify the current requirements before counting on it. And fifth: rentals are handled very informally, in cash, with one or two months' deposit and loose contracts — see the place in person before you pay anything.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
