Amán

Aprox. 1,275,857 habitantesApprox. 1,275,857 people

Amman is Jordan's capital, a city built over hills (the famous 'jabal') on a plateau at around 750–1,000 m, which gives it cool winters and even occasional snow. It mixes Roman ruins in the very centre with modern white-stone neighbourhoods climbing the slopes. It's a safe, hospitable capital and a very comfortable base for the rest of the country: Petra, the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum and Jerash are all a few hours away. The historic downtown (al-Balad) is its popular soul.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal: mild and dry. Summer is hot but dry; winter can be cold, with rain and the odd snowfall.

Jordan is pricier than many expect for the region, especially lodging and site entries. The Jordan Pass (which bundles the visa and Petra) saves a lot if you're touring the country.

EntradaEntry

Many nationalities get a visa on arrival; the Jordan Pass waives it free if you stay at least three nights and covers Petra and dozens of sites.

Downtown is walkable (lots of hills and stairs). Taxis (yellow, metered) and apps like Careem/Uber work well; buses connect to the rest of the country.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Amán?How much do you need per month in Amán?

Amman works if you want a calm, genuinely safe base with a real café and remote-work scene, minus the chaos of other capitals in the region: lots of NGO and UN staff, embassies and Arabic students, and English everywhere in the western half of the city. The surprise is the price — the dinar is pegged to the dollar (1 JOD ≈ US$1.41) and Jordan imports almost everything, including energy and much of its food, so living here costs noticeably more than Cairo or Istanbul. It doesn't work if you want cheap and walkable: Amman is built on hills, it sprawls, you'll lean on taxis or Careem, and winters in stone apartments with no central heating are rough.

Fiber covers much of west Amman (Orange, Zain, Umniah), but not every building has it — older blocks will still be sold DSL. Home plans typically run somewhere between 25 and 100 Mbps depending on the provider and how the building is wired, which is plenty for a day of video calls if you land on fiber. Always ask what's actually installed before signing a lease; don't assume. Power is stable — Jordan doesn't have the scheduled blackouts you'll find elsewhere in the region — so you won't be fighting outages. 4G is solid citywide and 5G is live in parts of town. Two honest caveats: Jordan has at various points restricted voice calls over apps (WhatsApp and similar), so test it the day you land and keep a backup; and water doesn't run continuously — it's delivered on a weekly rota into building tanks, which catches people off guard more than the internet does.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is real but small, and it revolves around the local startup and NGO ecosystem rather than a big nomad flow. The name everyone mentions is ZINC (Zain Innovation Campus), which is more of a startup campus/incubator than an open monthly hot-desk space — worth checking its current terms before you count on it. Beyond that there are independent coworkings around Shmeisani, Sweifieh and Jabal Amman, but they open and close, so don't fixate on a name: compare two or three once you land. A flexible desk usually runs ≈US$100–250 a month and varies wildly. In practice a lot of people just work from cafés — Weibdeh and Rainbow Street are full of spots where nobody rushes you out after three hours, and that's the city's actual remote-work circuit.

Jabal al-Weibdeh is the foreigner and creative favorite: one of the few genuinely walkable pockets of Amman, with cafés, galleries, photogenic stairways and real neighborhood feel. Jabal Amman (First to Third Circle, including Rainbow Street) is the historic, social side — stone houses, nightlife, and plenty of furnished short-term rentals. Abdoun is the embassy and old-money district up the hill: safe, tidy, pricier and very car-dependent. Sweifieh and Shmeisani are the practical picks — shops, supermarkets, offices and slightly lower rents — though without Weibdeh's charm. Downtown (Al-Balad) is cheap and authentic but loud, and not really set up for long-term living.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy, but the crowd isn't pure digital nomads: it's NGO and UN staff, embassies, development workers and Arabic students, which Amman has plenty of. In west Amman English gets you through almost everything, and Jordanians are genuinely hospitable, so invitations to coffee or a family meal come fast. The Spanish-speaking community is small — a few diplomats, aid workers and students — so don't count on a big Spanish-language scene; your daily life will run in English plus some Arabic. Meetups exist but aren't huge: the reliable entry points are Weibdeh's cafés, the Arabic language schools, and startup ecosystem events.

First thing: Amman is pricier than people assume. The dinar is pegged to the dollar, nearly everything is imported, and alcohol is taxed hard — a beer out can cost more than in Europe. Water is the serious one: Jordan is among the most water-stressed countries on earth, supply arrives on a rota (usually once a week) into your building's rooftop tanks, and you have to ration it — always ask which day your place gets water. Winter catches people out too: from December to February nights can drop close to 0 °C with wind and the odd snowfall, apartments are stone with no insulation or central heating, and heating with gas or AC gets expensive. On rentals, many landlords want several months or the full year upfront, and long-term leases are usually unfurnished; furnished short-term costs noticeably more. The city is hilly and sprawling: without a car you'll spend more on Careem than you budgeted. Safety-wise Amman is excellent, among the calmest cities in the region, but regional tension can disrupt flights and airspace, so buy flexible tickets. Watch the calendar: the weekend is Friday–Saturday, the city is shut on Friday morning, and during Ramadan you can't eat or drink in public during daylight and many businesses shift hours. On visas: many nationalities get a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable with the police if you stay longer, and a Jordan Pass bought before you fly can cover the fee if you stay at least three nights; there's no digital nomad visa, so confirm YOUR case with the embassy before booking.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
