It rises amid an immense plain of paddy fields —Kedah is Malaysia's "rice bowl"— a flat, green landscape stretching to the horizon. The city keeps a genuine historic core around its main square, with the elegant Zahir Mosque and the Balai Besar palace, and its skyline is marked by the Alor Setar Tower (Menara Alor Setar). It's also the birthplace of two Malaysian prime ministers.
